Scarborough Applaud Charity Day Idea
28th November, 2007
Scarborough Athletic have said they will do their best to help two local charities benefit from a record-breaking afternoon this weekend.
Staveley Miners Welfare announced earlier this week that, if they get their best ever crowd at Inkersall Road when the two sides clash on Saturday, their main sponsor Baris Group Ltd will donate ?500 to good causes in the communities of Scarborough and Staveley.
Their previous best crowd of 280 happened in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup against Stocksbridge Park Steels almost fourteen years ago.
Scarborough Athletic FC Chair Simon Cope said: "This is a great challenge for a good cause, and we hope that plenty of Boro fans make the trip.
"Our away support has been tremendous so far this season and fingers crossed we can help Staveley break their record."
Cope also praised the size of the charitable donation: "?500 is a decent weekly wage budget in this league, so this is a very generous offer indeed.
"A similar charitable donation from a Premier League team could easily be in excess of ?200,000."
