The focus turned mainly onto the start of the 2019/20 Buildbase FA Vase campaign with 27 First Round Qualifying ties involving Toolstation NCEL sides taking place over the weekend.

23 of those were played on Saturday with three of them being all-NCEL clashes with Liversedge, Barton Town and Brigg Town prevailing over Hallam, Retford FC and Armthorpe Welfare, respectively.

Sedge's match was the only one to go to extra-time as it was goalless after ninety minutes but Joe Walton broke the deadlock for the home side on 100 minutes before Samuel Smith quickly levelled for visitors Hallam.

There was then a dramatic finish as Michael Bottomley struck in stoppage time to make sure the Premier Division side progressed at the expense of their Division One rivals 2-1.

Barton also made their higher position tell but they were made to work hard for a 3-1 win at Retford, taking the lead on 22 minutes through Ben Hinchliffe before Shay Evans-Booth levelled matters from the spot midway through the second period.

Marc Cooper and Craig Disley, though, scored in the 73rd and 80th minute to ensure victory for the Swans.

In an all-Division One clash, Brigg went through 3-0 at home to Armthorpe with a Ryan Thompson double strike and a goal from James Osborne, all coming after the interval.

Selby Town and Nostell Miners Welfare are other Division One sides into the Second Round Qualifying stage after victories, with Selby picking up a 2-0 win at Avro.

Liam Flanagan netted twice towards the end of the opening half to claim a win against higher-ranked opposition.

Calum Ward also got a brace for Nostell as they beat visitors AFC Liverpool 4-1 with Richard Collier and Adam Hayton also getting on the scoresheet.

Elsewhere, AFC Mansfield needed an injury-time winner from top scorer Ross Duggan to sneak through 1-0 at home to Graham Street Prims whilst Lewis Bemrose and Jack Debnam scored for Grimsby Borough in a 2-1 win at Bacup Borough.

Garforth Town progressed by the same scoreline at Chester-Le-Street Town with Daniel Williams grabbing an 87th minute winner.

And, there was also a 2-1 victory for Knaresborough Town at the expense of visitors Washington, Stephen Bromley and Luke Harrop putting them two goals ahead before a late consolation for the away side.

Ben Grech-Brooksbank scored twice as Thackley eliminated Carlisle City 3-2 at Dennyfield, Alhassane Keita and Andrew Horbury got the goals for Albion Sports in a 2-0 victory at Willington and Yorkshire Amateur went through by a single goal, Ashley Flynn with a late winner, over Alnwick Town in a game played at Farsley Celtic FC.

Sadly, there were defeats on Saturday for Athersley Recreation, Campion, Eccleshill United, Goole AFC, Harrogate Railway Athletic, Maltby Main, Ollerton Town, Parkgate, Silsden, Staveley Miners Welfare and Swallownest.

Four ties took place on a goal-packed Sunday and it was an excellent day for the Toolstation NCEL with four of our sides progressing.

Leon Howarth, Joseph Thornton, Joe Parkin and Marley Grant scored for Handsworth in a 4-0 home victory over Shelley.

They will next host Glasshoughton Welfare who were 6-3 winners after extra time at Litherland REMYCA, with Nathan Perks scoring four to take his season's tally to six.

A Thomas Foltyn-Brown double ensured a 2-1 scoreline for Rossington Main at St Helens Town whilst there were eleven goals in a pulsating match between Worsbrough Bridge Athletic and Hall Road Rangers.

Ashley Emmett and Jack Wilson had the home side ahead by the 26th minute but Callum Stone, Dan O'Connor, Gary Bradshaw and Conner Harman struck to turn the game on its head and give Rangers a 4-2 interval lead.

Kieran Hirst made it 4-3 whereupon Stone and O'Connor each scored their second to seemingly put the game beyond doubt before Hirst struck again and Kyle Wordsworth also found the net to bring Worsbrough once more back to within one goal - but 6-5 proved to be the final scoreline in Rangers' favour.

Meanwhile, there were two matches in Division One on Saturday with Skegness Town going to the top of the table with a 7-0 home win over bottom side East Hull.

Jordan Smith, Gary King and Leigh Hutchinson gave the Lilywhites a three goal cushion by the interval before a Daniel Brooks brace and strikes in the last five minutes from William Britton and Callum Robinson sealed a comprehensive victory.

And, North Ferriby climb up into third spot, ahead of Winterton Rangers who they beat 2-0 at the Hammond Homes Stadium, Jamie Forrester and Morgan Brough with the goals, one in each half.
