Saturday Match Review
31st December, 2007
The top four in the Premier Division all won their final matches of 2007 to further cement their title challenge.
Winterton Rangers go into the New Year top of the pile on having extended their lead by goal difference over Liversedge with a 6-0 home hammering of Hallam.
That made it eight games unbeaten for the West Street side.
An Andrew Shuttleworth goal ten minutes from time saw Sedge pick up a 2-1 victory over visitors Maltby Main after Main's Scott Somerville had cancelled out Nicky Boshell's opener.
Third-placed Glapwell remained five points behind the top two after Michael Fox's 57th-minute penalty saw them win by a single goal at home to Arnold Town.
And, Pickering Town were 4-0 victors at bottom side Glasshoughton Welfare to stay seven points behind the leaders with all the goals coming in the first half.
Mark Swales, Wayne Aziz, Rob Eeles and Liam Salt all found the net in a dramatic ten-minute spell towards the end of the period.
Fifth-placed Selby Town's title challenge stuttered with a 2-2 draw at Eccleshill United.
Christian Fox had put them ahead in the eighth minute before Andy Philip brought the hosts level soon after.
Fox then added his and Selby's second on the half-hour mark but Gary Birchall claimed the point with his 55th-minute strike for the Eagles.
And, Armthorpe Welfare stayed in sixth after drawing 1-1 at home to South Normanton Athletic.
Stuart Preston opened the scoring for Welfare on 19 minutes before Lee Sutton grabbed the equaliser on the stroke of half time, his third goal in three games for the Shiners since joining from Arnold Town.
Nostell Miners Welfare brought an unwanted run to an end with their 5-1 home win over Brodsworth Welfare, their first league victory in fourteen games.
All the goals came in the second period with Francis Johnson, Oli Johnson and Dave Watts putting them well ahead before Welfare pulled one back on 67 minutes through Darren Pugh.
Darren Rushton and Jack Drury, though, halted the visitors' mini-fightback to secure the points for Nostell.
They were not top scorers on the day, though, as Parkgate went one better with a 6-1 defeat of visitors Mickleover Sports as Gavin Allott grabbed a hat-trick.
Lincoln Moorlands Railway and Long Eaton United were both 2-1 home winners.
Railway defeated Thackley with goals from Stuart King and Craig Bridge whilst a Danny Forrest penalty on 76 minutes pulled one back for the visitors.
Goals from Scott Downie and Matthew McCaul earned three points for Long Eaton over Shirebrook Town.
Gedling Town's lead at the top of Division One has been cut to a point as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Staveley Miners Welfare.
It could have been a lot worse for them as they went behind to goals from Lee Gregory and Ryan Damms.
But, a brace from Alan Jefferies in the last quarter-of-an-hour saved a point for the leaders.
Second-placed Bottesford Town closed in on them with a 5-2 home victory over Teversal.
A Paul Chatterton penalty plus goals from Simon Roach and Craig Lill had them three-up by half-time.
Roach claimed the fourth after the interval before Adrian Carter opened the scoring for the visitors, Simon Drayton restored the host's four-goal lead and Andy Woodcock grabbed another consolation for Teversal on 75 minutes.
Dinnington Town came from behind to stay in third place, two points behind Gedling Town, with a 4-1 win at home to Borrowash Victoria.
The Vics went ahead through Phil Summerfield on the half-hour mark before the complete turnaround in the second period with two goals from Ant Lynam and one each from Grant Allott and Ben Rosser.
A season's best crowd of 605 had to wait until injury time to see Scarborough Athletic pick up the three points against visitors Pontefract Collieries.
Substitute Craig Hogg came off the bench to claim the victory that saw them move up to fourth whilst the Colls remain next-to-bottom having failed to win in their last fifteen games.
Basement side Rossington Main, meanwhile, are still searching for their first victory of the Division One season after going down 2-0 at home to Leeds Met Carnegie.
Chris Thackray and Rob Smith both struck in the second half to move Leeds Met up into fifth.
Hall Road Rangers climbed to sixth as goals from Lee Harper and David Ingram saw them win 2-0 at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
Rainworth Miners Welfare won their first home game in six matches with a 3-1 victory over Barton Town Old Boys that moved them up into tenth.
Joe Naylor, Richard Smith and Matt Draper got them the points after the visitors had gone ahead through Gareth Barlow.
And, a Simon Kirsima hat-trick helped Yorkshire Amateur to a 5-2 win at home to Tadcaster Albion.
