Saturday Match Review

19th November, 2007

Three NCEL clubs have made it through to the Third Round of the FA Vase with two sides requiring a replay to become the fourth.

Eccleshill United and Pickering Town will meet again in midweek after a 1-1 draw at Plumpton Park on Saturday.

Richard Whitfield had put the Pikes ahead halfway through the first period before a Chris Rosindale penalty on the hour mark brought the scores level.

In the other all-NCEL clash, Hallam progressed with a single-goal victory at home to Glasshoughton Welfare as Billy Rowley's 61st-minute strike separated the sides.

The two other winners needed extra-time to overcome difficult opponents.

Winterton Rangers got over the blow of conceding an equaliser in the last minute of normal time to go through in a 4-3 thriller at Bootle.

The North West Counties Division One side had gone ahead through a Carl Dale penalty on nineteen minutes before Rob Northen, Andy Holt and Mark Whitehouse had put Rangers in a 3-1 lead with twenty minutes remaining.

An Andy Fowler brace brought Bootle level but Holt popped up for his second and Winterton's winner in the 95th minute.

And, all the action came in extra-time for Gedling Town at home to Cradley Town of the Midlands Football Alliance.

James Carvey opened the scoring for the visitors from the penalty spot in the 93rd minute of the match but Gedling turned around the game in the second period with James Whitehead levelling matters before Tim Wilks grabbed the winner at the death.

There was disappointment, however, for the remaining three sides who were all beaten away from home.

Rainworth Miners Welfare lost narrowly 1-0 at North West Counties' Flixton, whilst Long Eaton United went down 2-0 at Boston Town of the United Counties League.

And, Borrowash Victoria were knocked out 3-0 by Heath Hayes of the Midland Football Combination.

There were seven matches in the NCEL Premier Division with top spot changing hands once again.

Glapwell returned to summit and remain unbeaten after a 5-0 demolition of Thackley with five different scorers at Hall Corner.

The game was over by half-time with goals from Nathan Hollingworth, Ian Brown, Aaron Brady and a Matt Varley penalty before Steve Roebuck completed the scoring on 74 minutes.

They are one point clear of Pickering Town whilst Liversedge moved up into third with a 4-2 victory at South Normanton Athletic.

Matthew Sparks and Andy Markham had Sedge two-up by the break before Nathan Scott pulled one back for Athletic.

Matt Fahy restored the two-goal cushion on 73 minutes, only to see Kelvin Mushambi reduce the deficit once more before Luke Sherman made sure of the points in injury time for the visitors.

Nostell Miners Welfare dropped to fifth as the former leaders' wretched run of form continued.

A 6-1 defeat at Armthorpe Welfare has made it seven games without a win after their whirlwind start.

A Henry Sibenge hat-trick helped Armthorpe to the victory that moved them up to sixth along with goals from Jason Blunt, Nathan Iley and Stephen Rock whilst Neil Samardizj grabbed the consolation for Nostell.

Steve Lyon's brace with a Christian Fox goal in-between gave Selby Town a 3-1 win at Mickleover Sports, a victory that saw them climb to seventh.

That was after Adam Slater had given an 11th-minute lead to Sports, who slipped to thirteenth as result of the defeat.

Brodsworth Welfare remain bottom on goal difference despite a spirited performance in a 2-0 defeat at ninth-placed Arnold Town.

Second-half strikes from Chris Freestone and Mark O'Dea earned the Eagles the three points.

Just above Brodsworth are Lincoln Moorlands Railway who lost 3-2 at home to managerless Shirebrook Town.

And, Daniel Mullooly's hit twice in the last nineteen minutes to give Maltby Main a 2-1 victory at Parkgate, after Steve Ward had opened the scoring on the half-hour for the home side.

Teversal returned to the top of Division One after sharing six goals in a dramatic match at AFC Emley.

Andy Woodcock earned them the point with three minutes remaining with his second of the match, the first coming in the opening seconds of the game that had seemingly put Teversal on their way to victory.

But, Sean Hazelden and Gavin Birmingham had put Emley in the lead by the break and Marc Townsend added a third just after the interval.

Mark Scott halved the deficit for Teversal on 54 minutes before Woodcock popped up with the late equaliser.

A second-half demolition job by Scarborough Athletic saw them move up into third with a 4-0 victory at home to basement outfit Rossington Main, who are the only team yet to win this season.

Main's cause wasn't helped when they were reduced to ten men in the opening period.

Athletic punished them with a Ryan Blott brace plus one each from Richard Medcalf and Scott Phillips in front of a crowd of 493.

Barton Town Old Boys climbed to fourth with a 4-3 victory in a roller-coaster match at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.

The visitors went ahead through a Roy Raspin strike on five minutes but Craig Wilkinson restored parity from the penalty spot soon after and Lee Garside converted on the half-hour mark to give Athletic the lead.

Mark Anderson levelled for Barton, though, before the break and Matty McKay put them 3-2 up on 67 minutes.

That was not the end of the drama as Lee Poskitt equalised for Worsbrough eight minutes later but it was Barton and Craig Burdick who had the final say to take the points back to the Euronics Ground.

It was not so dramatic for Hall Road Rangers at home to Staveley Miners Welfare but it was still a vital three points for the Dene Park side as they won 2-1 to go up into fifth, one spot above their opponents.

Martin Thacker scored both their goals, one in each half, whilst Welfare's effort came from Scott Ellis.

Rangers also went above Leeds Met Carnegie who were reduced to nine men and beaten 3-2 at Bottesford Town.

Paul Harrison had put Leeds Met ahead on 50 minutes before Paul Chatterton got the equaliser soon after from the penalty spot.

The visitors seemed certain to get an unlikely victory when Kev Ryan put them back in the lead with ten minutes remaining.

But, Bottesford's numerical advantage finally told with Simon Roach and Phil Jackman grabbing two late goals to move their side up into eighth.

Ant Lynam and Michael Blythen struck late to give Dinnington Town a 2-0 home win over Tadcaster Albion and Ashely Robinson's goal gave next-to-bottom Pontefract Collieries a vital point at Yorkshire Amateur.
