Midweek Match Review

4th October, 2007

Three NCEL clubs will take part in the Third Round of Qualifying in the FA Cup ? the most from the League at that stage for several seasons.

Rainworth Miners Welfare and Glapwell joined Dinnington Town by winning their matches in midweek.

Welfare's performance against Kidsgrove Athletic, a side two levels above them in the National League System, was undoubtedly the highlight.

A Malc Brown strike on six minutes and Danny Naylor with seventeen minutes remaining saw Rudy Funk and Billy Millar's side progress to jubilant scenes.

Glapwell also produced a fine result with a 2-1 victory at Midland Alliance side Market Drayton Town in their replay to remain unbeaten this season.

Matt Varley from the penalty spot and an injury time goal by Craig Mitchell had them two-up by the break.

Then, a Martyn Davies spot-kick on 51 minutes brought the hosts back within touching distance but the Hall Corner outfit held on.

They now host British Gas Business Premier Division side Corby Town on October 13th whilst Rainworth travel to Chasetown who are in Division One in that league and Dinnington entertain Bradford Park Avenue.

There was plenty of League action, meanwhile, in midweek with Nostell Miners Welfare maintaining a four-point lead at the top of the Premier Division.

Goals from Ben Gilbert, Michael Long and Neil Samardizj helped them to a 3-1 home win over Hallam who had taken the lead in the opening minute through Matthew Brown.

But, keeping on their tails are Winterton Rangers who won a breathtaking match, 6-3, against visitors Arnold Town.

The Eagles started terribly as Andy Catton struck twice whilst Matthew Plant and Rob Northen also found the net to give Rangers a four-goal cushion by the half-hour.

But, two goals from Chris Freestone brought it back to 4-2 by sixty minutes as a mini-revival was threatened.

Plant got his second and Winterton's fifth but Mark Gadsby pulled it back to 5-3 for Arnold before Steve Underwood gave the home side the final say in the last minute.

But, the biggest winners in midweek were Selby Town who thumped hosts Brodsworth Welfare 7-0 to move up into sixth.

Two each from Christian Fox and Bruno Holden plus goals from Andrew Dawson, Craig Sutton and Adam Lee saw them claim their biggest victory of the season so far.

The Robins are one place behind Pickering Town who, through a Matthew Biggins brace, won 2-0 at Long Eaton United.

Mickleover Sports climbed to eighth with a 4-2 win over Lincoln Moorlands Railway with all the goals coming in a 22-minute spell in the second period.

David Holmes started the scoring for the home side on 48 minutes before adding a second four minutes later.

Rob Spencer claimed a third on 62 minutes before Railway suddenly came alive and back into the game with goals from Rob Lund and Chris Gray.

But, Dave Middleditch got the vital fourth for Sports on 70.

And, an Adam Fretwell penalty deep into injury time saw Parkgate claim a last-gasp point at South Normanton Athletic in a 2-2 draw.

Gedling Town returned to the top of Division One and maintained their one-hundred percent record as Carl Horder and Tim Wilks struck in the first half in a 2-1 win at Teversal as a Lee Soar own goal on 82 minutes gave the home side some late joy.

And, Staveley Miners Welfare came from behind to win by the same scoreline to beat Leeds Met Carnegie and climb to third.

Neil Crosby put the visitors ahead on 18 minutes before Lee Gregory and Ryan Damms struck in the second period.

And, it was a point each at Bracken Edge as Yorkshire Amateur and Borrowash Victoria drew 1-1.
