Saturday Match Review
11th September, 2007
There was FA Vase, League Cup, Premier Division and Division One action in a dramatic and busy schedule on Saturday.
Six NCEL sides joined the 22 already in the Second Round of Qualifying in the FA Vase whilst five bowed out and one will be involved in a replay this week.
The successes included four home victories with Borrowash Victoria, Hall Road Rangers, Nostell Miners Welfare and South Normanton Athletic all progressing.
The Vics were 3-1 winners over Tividale thanks to goals from Wayne Thornhill, Tommy Leighton and Jamie Pawley after a Lee Onions penalty had put the visitors ahead.
A Mike Gibson strike and a Paul Palmer penalty put Rangers through 2-0 against fellow NCEL side Yorkshire Amateur.
It was the same scoreline for Welfare against Abbey Hey, Dave Watts and Paul Bedford netting for the Premier Division outfit.
And, Martin Bowles' effort twenty minutes from the time was the only goal in Athletic's clash with Newark Town.
Staveley Miners Welfare were one of two sides tasting success on their travels as they beat Radford 3-1 in extra time.
It looked as though the Central Midlands Supreme Division side would be going through after Matthew Eastwood's 43rd-minute strike.
But, Welfare equalised deep in stoppage time through Paul Clements to force an extra thirty minutes in which Jonathan Wall nabbed a brace to progress.
It was an easier rite of passage for Winterton Rangers, meanwhile, as a second-half Rob Northen hat-trick ? including one penalty ? saw them win 3-0 at Ryton.
Thackley will need a replay after being held 1-1 at home to South Shields, that after Phil Holmes had given them the perfect start with the opener after two minutes.
Arnold Town were beaten 3-1 at home to Westfields whilst Rossington Main, Shirebrook Town and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic all tasted defeat on their travels.
Meanwhile, there was one clash in the First Round of the NCEL League Cup with six goals between Bottesford Town and Teversal.
Paul Chatterton, Phil Jackman and John Baross had given Bottesford a three-goal cushion before half-time but it stayed that way until the last seven minutes when Barry Stokes grabbed one back for Teversal.
Their fightback was halted though as Jackman claimed his second and the home side's fourth to end the match as a contest, before Michael Lyall's injury time strike made it 4-2.
In the Premier Division, Glapwell stretched their lead at the top to four points with a 5-0 win at Glasshoughton Welfare, who were dumped bottom as a result.
The Hall Corner side had five different scorers ? Aaron Shelley, Ian Brown, Michael Fox, Aaron Brady and Marc Sherlock ? to make it five wins out of five, four away from home.
Hallam moved up into fourth with a 3-0 win at Brodsworth Welfare whilst Liversedge climbed to sixth with a 4-1 home victory over Mickleover Sports.
A Nicky Boshell brace, one from Matthew Biddle and a Mark Blount own goal set them on their way to victory before Tony Law hit a late consolation.
Steve Lyon struck the only goal in the second minute to claim three points for Selby Town at Long Eaton United, a win that elevates them to seventh.
The match of the day came at Muglet Lane where Pickering Town edged a seven-goal thriller against their hosts Maltby Main.
The Pikes opened the scoring on ten minutes through Mark Swales before Ashley Longstaff levelled matters soon after and Daniel Payne gave the hosts the lead at the start of the second period.
Pickering fought back and regained the lead once more thanks to two goals from Liam Salt.
Payne made it 3-3 on 73 minutes before James Drinkall, in his return to the club, gave the Pikes the victory with nine minutes remaining to move them off the foot of the table.
Two goals from Scott Somerville helped Parkgate to a 3-1 win at Eccleshill United whilst Lincoln Moorlands Railway shared a 2-2 draw with visitors Armthorpe Welfare.
Gedling Town moved to the top of Division One as a Tim Wilks hat-trick was part of 4-1 home victory over Pontefract Collieries.
Phil Massingham got the fourth whilst Tom Grindel produced one piece of joy for the visitors.
And, Rainworth Miners Welfare's excellent start to their first ever NCEL season continued with a 5-2 win against AFC Emley.
A first-half hat-trick from Mark Shaw, that included a spot kick, helped the home side to a 4-1 advantage by the interval.
Welfare now sit fourth in the table whilst Emley drop to ninth.
