Midweek Match Review
24th August, 2007
Four more NCEL sides have made it through to the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup after winning their replays in midweek.
There was a seven-goal thriller in an all-NCEL clash at the Clayborn Ground where Liversedge took on Glasshoughton Welfare.
Nicky Boshell had put Sedge ahead in the opening seconds as he converted a spot kick but Welfare turned the first half around and were leading by the break thanks to a Nigel Croad brace.
Luke Sherman brought the scores level on the hour mark before Julien Wilkes put Glasshoughton ahead once more.
But, there was to be another twist as Sherman grabbed two more to claim his hat-trick with the winner, making it 4-3 to Liversedge, coming from the penalty spot with ten minutes remaining.
And, in the other replay to pit two NCEL clubs together, Selby Town were victorious at home to Pontefract Collieries but it took an extra-time goal from Adam Russell to get the Premier Division side through against their Division One opposition.
There was another nailbiter involving Teversal at Coventry Sphinx.
The Carnarvon Street side had gone two-up through goals from Micky Clarke in the opening half-hour before they let the hosts draw level during the second-half.
Extra-time came and went without any addition to the score so it went to penalties that Teversal won 6-5 to set up a mouthwatering NCEL derby clash with Rainworth Miners Welfare.
Glapwell were convincing winners at Dudley Town as they cantered to a 5-0 victory.
Ian Brown, Colin Cockerill and David Rimmington had ended the tie as a contest before half-time and then Aaron Brady added a fourth before Cockerill got his second to end the rout.
Arnold Town were sadly beaten on penalties at home to Shifnal Town after a 1-1 draw and Rossington Main bowed out of the competition as they were beaten 5-0 at Atherton Collieries.
Meanwhile, the second round of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy got underway with varying fortunes for the NCEL newcomers.
Leeds Met Carnegie lost 5-2 at home to Dinnington Town on Monday night with Ant Lynam, Ben Rosser, two from Matt Wragg and one from Matt Griffin for the visitors, Paul Harrison and Neil Crosby got the goals for Leeds Met.
Tuesday night saw over 400 people watch Scarborough Athletic's first ever competitive home match.
But, fellow NCEL newboys Rainworth Miners Welfare spoiled the party with a single-goal victory in extra-time as Richard Smith struck in the 109th minute.
There was also an extra-time victory for Bottesford Town at Yorkshire Amateur ? Carl La Rocca and Phil Jackman sealing the win after it had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.
And, Barton Town Old Boys were 4-1 victors at home to AFC Emley.
Extra-time and penalties were the order of the day in the only Wilkinson Sword tie to be played on Wednesday.
Hall Road Rangers and Borrowash Victoria shared four goals in 120 minutes of pulsating football at Dene Park before Rangers went through 4-2 in the shoot-out.
