Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2021/22 #53

27th February, 2022

There was stalemate as the top two sides met in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division on Saturday, leaving leaders Grimsby Borough with a nine-point lead at the summit.

The day's biggest crowd of 325 watched Borough and visitors Eccleshill United play out a goalless draw and, with the Eagles in second place but with two games in hand on their hosts, the title race is still far from over.

The other two teams in the top four faced each other with third-placed Garforth Town prevailing in a 2-0 win at Sherwood Colliery to close the gap on second to five points.

Joseph Colley broke the deadlock and Hass Gordji's strike just before half-time doubled the Miners advantage over Colliery who drop to fifth below Penistone Church who won 1-0 at Goole AFC.

Jordan Coduri got the only goal of the game at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds to stretch the Penguins' unbeaten run to six games as they climb up the table to fourth.

Two injury-time goals snatched Winterton Rangers a 4-2 home victory over Staveley Miners Welfare, Josh Walker's second and a strike from Steven Ridley making it four wins in a row for Rangers who stay sixth, ahead of Handsworth who were the day's biggest winners.

Anthony Mackie's hat-trick, braces for Mitchell Dunne and Leon Howard, and a goal from Kane Reece saw them defeat visitors Thackley 8-0, the biggest home win of the season in the Premier Division.

At the foot of the table, Albion Sports moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Bottesford Town, early goals from Mohammed Qasim and Matthias Britton giving the Lions three vital points.

Hemsworth Miners Welfare return to the bottom two despite a 1-1 draw at AFC Mansfield, Nash Connolly putting them ahead before Ross Duggan's penalty midway through the second half made it honours even.

Basement side Athersley Recreation are starting to run out of games as their 4-2 loss at Silsden AFC, including a brace from Finn Donovan, sees them twelve points from safety with ten matches remaining.

Meanwhile, there were 2-1 wins for Barton Town at Emley AFC and for Maltby Main at home to Knaresborough Town and they move up to eighth and ninth in the table, respectively.

Hallam's three point gap at the top of Division One remains intact after Kieran Watson got both of their goals, sandwiching a Jack Appleyard equaliser for hosts Glasshoughton Welfare, in a 2-1 victory.

Oliver Donald struck twice as second-placed North Ferriby keep on their tracks following their 3-0 defeat of hosts Ollerton Town, Thomas Corner with the Villagers' third five minutes from time.

Brigg Town have lost ground in third as they went down 3-2 at Hall Road Rangers, Lewis Gibson, James Piercy and Reece Moody ensuring a home victory that moves their side up into tenth.

There were wins for the other two sides in the play-off zone as Marcus Day grabbed a late winner for Harrogate Railway Athletic as they beat visitors Shirebrook Town 2-1.

And, Rossington Main won by a single goal at FC Humber United, courtesy of a last-gasp Myron Gibbons goal, in a game dedicated to the Football v Homophobia campaign.

Seventh-placed Retford FC are now four points away from the play-off positions in seventh after they went down 2-1 to visitors Rainworth Miners Welfare, Nathan Benger with an 88th minute goal that gave a vital win to the Wrens and leaves them four points above the drop zone.

Swallownest are out of the bottom three following their 5-1 home win over Nostell Miners Welfare, Jack Haslam's double added to by Max Skelton, Jack Watts and James Woodhouse.

A fifth successive defeat sees Clipstone fall into the relegation places, Matthew Ord with two goals as their hosts Dronfield Town condemned them to a 3-1 loss.

Things look very bleak now for Teversal whose 2-0 loss at Parkgate sees the bottom side now seventeen points away from safety with nine games remaining.

Meanwhile, there was a 3-0 victory for Armthorpe Welfare, Rhys Plater, Conner Williamson and Jack Shaw with the goals at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic to keep their side in ninth spot.
