Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2021/22 #47

3rd February, 2022

Albion Sports caused a County Cup upset whilst Grimsby Borough and Hallam are both six points clear at the top of the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division and Division One, respectively, after this midweek's action.

In a Battle of the Lions, Sports progressed to the Semi-Finals of the West Riding County Cup, winning on spot kicks after a 2-2 home draw with Vanarama National North side Guiseley.

Kamron Basi's early opener for the hosts was quickly cancelled out and they found themselves behind at the break before Jamal Stewart took the game to penalties with an equaliser eleven minutes before time and Sports won 4-2 in the shoot-out.

Borough, meanwhile, were 3-0 winners at home to Hemsworth Miners Welfare on Wednesday to regain their six point advantage at the summit in the Premier Division.

Adam Drury and Jack Debnam gave them a two goal advantage by the interval with Thomas Hipwell adding their third on 80 minutes to claim the victory over Hemsworth who remain a point above the drop zone.

Second-placed Eccleshill United had temporarily narrowed the gap at the top with a 2-0 win at Thackley the previous night, Andrew Cooper and Luke Aldrich with the Eagles' goals towards the end of each half.

Garforth Town lost a little ground on the top two with a 0-0 home draw with Barton Town, leaving them five points behind Eccleshill in third.

Barton, meanwhile, stretch their unbeaten league run to seventeen games and they are yet to be beaten on their travels in the Premier Division this season.

Two early goals from Kieran Watson secured Hallam a 2-1 win at Retford FC that extends their advantage in pole position in Division One, Alex Wonham pulling one back for the seventh-placed hosts on 39 minutes.

Rossington Main strengthened their hold on a play-off place with a 4-0 win at bottom side Teversal with two goals each for Myron Gibbons and Zephaniah Thomas.

They are now three points clear of sixth-placed Selby Town who drew 2-2 at Swallownest, Kain Rogerson's injury time penalty rescuing the Robins a draw at the expense of their hosts who desperately needed a win to help their relegation battle.

There was also a 2-2 draw between Armthorpe Welfare and Hall Road Rangers with Joseph Pugh netting twice for the hosts whilst Joe McFadyen did the same for the visitors.

And, Shirebrook Town took a 3-0 lead at neighbours Rainworth Miners Welfare with Ashley Grayson, Kenan McKenzie and Daniel Ramsey getting on the scoresheet before the Wrens pulled one back in first half stoppage time through Nathan Benger.

Kane Hempshall pulled a further one back for the home side but Shirebrook held on for a 3-2 victory that moves them four points clear of their hosts in sixteenth spot.
