Adams Is The Main Man

28th May, 2008

Steve Adams has been appointed as the new manager of Maltby Main.

He will replace Robbie Barron who stepped down due to family and work commitments at the end of the season.

Steve has over 38 years of football experience and has been youth team manager at Stocksbridge Park Steels for the past 7 years.

In that time, he had steered the team to three league titles and produced nine players who have progressed to play UniBond League football.

His playing experience includes Sheffield Lane Top, Jubilee Sports, Rawmarsh Welfare and Selby Town whilst he also has coaching experience with Sheffield United Academy.

A spokesperson for the club was clearly delighted with appointment, saying: "Steve has a raft of coaching qualifications, including UEFA B.

"He came across by far as the best candidate from a shortlist of four at the interview stage where he was seen as the ideal candidate for furthering the long-term future of Maltby Main FC."

Main Close To Unveiling New Boss

23rd May, 2008

The Dinnington Guardian is reporting that Maltby Main should have a new manager in place by the end of today.

They say that the club were interviewing candidates yesterday who had made it onto the shortlist of four, and an announcement is expected in the next few hours.

The shortlisted candidates are all believed to have experience at Northern Counties East League level at least, with one former Worksop Town assistant rumoured to be in the frame.

Club secretary John Mills believes the new man in charge will need to be a forward thinking manager, as the club looks to gain FA Charter Standard.

He told the Guardian: "What we're looking to do at the moment is to try and get the Charter Standard, and the new manager will need to have certain qualifications and UEFA badges."

Mills says the manager, and the club, should be focusing on the future, rather than concentrating so much on the present.

"We're looking to take a positive step forward, not just looking at the season ahead, or trying to win the league.

"Previous managers and indeed the club have never looked past one season and now we want to look forward and build for the future."

The recently departed first team manager Robbie Barron will remain with the club in his role as development officer to keep continuity at Muglet Lane.

Main Hunt For New Manager

28th April, 2008

Robbie Barron has told Maltby Main that he will be unable to continue as manager next season.

He has said that family and work commitments will not allow him to do justice to the role.

The club has thanked him for his efforts in keeping Main in the Premier Division, something they have called "a magnificent achievement" after the club lost 90% of its first choice players in February when Sean Kay resigned.

A number of local players were drafted into the squad and have shone since being signed, such as centre halves Danny Reilly and Alex Wilson, Carl Thornton (five goals in six games), Danny White and Ryan Welsh.

They are all Maltby youngsters who have come through the junior clubs, Maltby Juniors and Birks Holt, and who have been given an unexpected crack at NCEL football.

Robbie will remain an active member of the club in his role as Development Officer.

The club is inviting applications for the vacant manager's position - aspiring applicants should send their CV to John Mills, 11 Norwood Avenue, Maltby, Rotherham, S66 8JG or email the club at enquiries@maltbymainfc.f9.co.uk.

18th April, 2008

Maltby Main are urging fans to come and watch their crucial game with Glasshoughton Welfare for free.

The Muglet Main side know that a victory against the NCEL Premier Division's bottom side on Saturday could do their top flight survival hopes the world of good.

And, the club hope that local football fans will come out in their droves to support them after it was announced that Hawleys Tyres and Exhausts will pick up the matchday costs thanks to the generosity of Main general manager Martin Hawley.

Maltby Announce Change Of Management

29th February, 2008

Maltby Main have appointed Robbie Barron as their new boss following the departure of Sean Kay.

The Muglet Lane side's Club Development Officer was quick to offer his services as caretaker manager after Kay resigned following the 4-1 defeat at Hallam on the 16th of February.

And, the club say that, "as several of the playing squad chose to follow Sean and leave the club, Robbie did exceptionally well to assemble a team to play at Nostell Miners Welfare the following Saturday."

The statement continued: "The club can only speculate as to why Sean's resignation sparked a mass exodus of players from the club.

"Robbie and the rest of the club committee would like to place on record their thanks to the players who have remained loyal to Maltby Main and who now figure strongly in Robbie's plans for the rest of the season.

"The club is, however, hopeful that squad members will return to the fold for this season's run-in."

Robbie has appointed former Parkgate Reserves coach Wayne Grant as his assistant and former Barnsley, Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers, Scarborough and Stocksbridge Park Steels player, Sean Dunphy, as club coach.

Main Say Welcome Home To Duo

3rd February, 2008

Maltby Main manager Sean Kay believes the return of top scorer Ashley Longstaff and goalkeeper Liam Richardson is a massive boost.

Longstaff contacted Kay about coming back to Muglet Lane after being left on the sidelines at Goole and the Maltby boss welcomed him with open arms, playing him in the goalless draw at home to Shirebrook Town.

Kay told the Dinnington Guardian: "When he left, he had thirteen goals under his belt. He went to Goole and scored a hat-trick on his debut, but they rotate their squad and he was left out for a few games.

"He thought he needed to be playing and rang up and asked if he could come to watch on Saturday and then told me he wanted to come back, so I threw him straight in against Shirebrook. He never stopped running and gave them a headache."

Meanwhile, Richardson was first choice goalkeeper at Lincoln United but, according to Kay, missed the camaraderie of the Maltby dressing room.

Kay said: "Liam told me he wasn't enjoying his football at Lincoln United so he came back and kept the first clean sheet we've had in a long time. The defence looked happy in front of him and he was very confident in goal."

Another welcome addition to the Muglet Lane staff is Kay's new right-hand man Bob Bradbury.

The Maltby boss said: "Bob has worked for many years with Paul Mitchell and followed him to Gainsborough Trinity.

"He came in on Saturday and said we had a brilliant dressing room and a great team spirit, we just need to start scoring goals."

Kay Gives Himself Three Matches

30th August, 2007

Sean Kay is giving himself three games to turn around Maltby's season or he will quit.

The honest Muglet Lane boss has been left bemused by the dreadful start his side have made to the Northern Counties campaign and can't put his finger on the reason.

And if he hasn't done so by the time they've hosted South Normanton Athletic on Wednesday 12th September he will consider his future as the club?s manager.

"I'm not the type of manager who will hang around until Christmas," Kay told the Dinnington Guardian this week, following the side's back-to-back Bank Holiday weekend defeats.

"If I can't get it right in the next three games then I will move on, I won't hide from anything.

"A new manager needs three quarters of a season to put things right. That's how serious I see it, even after four or five games."

But, his desire to be the man to get things right remains steadfast.

Under Kay, Maltby had one of their best seasons in recent times with a top-half finish, having led the Premier Division in the autumn.

But they have lost three of their first four games and were dumped out of the FA Cup by local rivals Dinnington Town.

He said: "If they want to back me to get it right I will willingly stay on and do so.

"Football is about honesty and that's how I feel at the moment.

"Everything is fine in training, the spirit in the camp is good, we just don't seem to be getting it right on the pitch.

"The players I'm picking are good enough for this league. But there's something missing. What it is, I don't know.?

Kay's Fresh Pair Of Eyes

28th June, 2007

Maltby Main boss Sean Kay hopes new assistant Shaun Hird can provide a fresh pair of eyes to his squad after the former Worksop Town coach opted to join the Muglet Laners.

Kay looks forward to his second full season in charge of Main and has been working behind the scenes to ensure the squad are ready for another campaign in the Northern Counties East League.

And he is using his pre-season friendlies as an opportunity for Hird to assess Main's squad.

He told the Dinnington Guardian this week: "We've brought Shaun in, who I have known for more than 20 years, and hopefully he can give an opinion by the start of the season just where we need to strengthen.

"I am in the process of organising pre-season friendlies, but one thing is for sure, we won't be playing the likes of Sheffield Wednesday or Sheffield United.

"The problem with those sorts of games is that they will let us play football and the lads will be stroking the ball around the park. When it comes to the league, they're not going to know what has hit them and we?ll need three or four games to adjust."

Kay is running the rule over former Rotherham United defender Craig Roden, who has returned to the game with a desire to play in attack ? but he will have to oust hotshot Scott Somerville, who hit 18 goals in 20 games last season.

Kay added: "The plan is to keep together the squad we had last season. There has been an awful lot of interest in Scott Somerville, but he has chosen to stay with us for another season.

"Scott could have gone on and made a fair amount of money, but credit to him, he's a local lad and he's staying."
