Ex-Aldershot Chairman At Hall Corner

8th March, 2007

Former Aldershot FC chairman Colin Hancock this week explained his motivation for becoming involved with ambitious NCEL club Glapwell, and what he believes he can bring to the club.

Mr Hancock, 61, is director of the Denticare of Harley Street Group which has branches in Mansfield, Nottingham and Newark as well as in Wales, and was chairman of Aldershot when they were a League club.

And he explained: "There is no better training ground for running a professional club than with small clubs struggling to stay alive in the lower divisions.

"While I was with Aldershot we had some great experiences. We were promoted in the first year of the Play-offs, beating both Bolton and Wolves.

"It was Ian Greaves, when he was manager of Mansfield, who stressed the 'we' rather than the 'I' in football when it comes to lower division survival."

The Glapwell link comes because Mr Hancock is a native of the area.

He was born in Doe Lea and his parents still live in Bramley Vale.

"I was brought up in a sporting family which was well known for its boxing success, but I was channelled into football, cricket and athletics, which I enjoyed to a good standard," he continued.

He went on to play football at representative level with England U18s, British Universities, AFA and FA Colts, as well as with Chesterfield and Notts County, and while playing for London University he gained an FA coaching qualification.

"I also played cricket for Glapwell Colliery - and I can tell you that there were some really good players around the mining community in those days, playing some excellent wickets," he recalled.

"I am now back in the area, living in Nottingham, and I have learned a great deal and experienced some good times.

"Many of the lasting friendships I've made have come about because of the local support of people and their pride in the achievements of a local kid.

"If I can help Glapwell Football Club to progress and secure its future, so that the community can support its current crop of local talent, I shall feel that I have repaid a little of the support and encouragement that I felt as a youngster," he added.

"We have a good basis to go forward at Glapwell.

"The Caton family have achieved wonders to bring this little club to the point where they are able to look at progressing to the UniBond League.

"We have a good bunch of players and some individuals with potential as well as a management team with ability, experience and ambition."

He ended: "It is up to us as a board of directors, together with our management committee, to satisfy their appetite for success, and I hope the local people will give them the support that they need and deserve, and so help us to help them realise some success on the field.

"Then we can get on with the business of securing and stabilising the club.

"These are exciting times and I am honoured to have been asked to come on board Glapwell FC Ltd."

All Change At Hall Corner

17th January, 2007

Ambitious Premier Division side Glapwell have announced that a new consortium led by two local businessmen are to take over at the helm.

The changes will come into effect from 1st February, and although the identities of the new people have yet to be announced, the news has been welcomed by current chairman and secretary Roger and Ellen Caton.

Club commercial manager Kevin Gee confirmed in a statement at the weekend that the club have been approached by two local businessmen who, along with the backing of a number of other major investors, are to take control of the football club, to try to ensure that all the previous hard work done by Mr and Mrs Caton can continue.

They in turn will become life presidents, and will also continue in their current roles of general manager and secretary.

Mrs Caton said: "Glapwell Football Club have been a major part of both our lives and those of our families, and we are very proud of the way the football club has progressed and our achievements to date.

"Glapwell have held a high position in non-league football for a number of years now.

"However, although we both have as much enthusiasm now as when we first started, unfortunately we haven't quite got as much energy.

"I believe timing is very important at any football club, and therefore we feel that it is now time for younger bodies and new investment to ensure Glapwell's continuing success.

"These are very exciting times at the club, with phase one of our developments already in place, to be completed by the end of March, with new changing rooms and state-of-the-art physio room.

"Kevin is already speaking to the new investors to set a realistic target to start phase two on the ground which is to convert the football club into Glapwell Sports and Social Club, incorporating a gymnasium, fitness suite, indoor five-a-side and badminton courts, a modernised social bar, and hospitality area.

"My dream is that once finalised it will bring the whole community of Glapwell together and generate improved facilities for the health and well-being of everyone, both young and old," she added.

Green Light For Ground Improvements

23rd November, 2006

Glapwell Football Club has received planning permission in respect of Phase 1 of their Ground Grading Developments.

Plans have now been agreed and passed for developing their existing changing rooms to UniBond specifications, incorporating a new state of the art physio/recovery room, as well as public toilets with disabled toilet access.

The total cost of the project will be around ?40,000, which will be self-funded by the club and work is planned to start early in the New Year, with completion in time for Glapwell?s last league game against Maltby Main in April 2007.

In addition to the work scheduled for the changing rooms, two turnstiles have already been installed at the existing ground entrance, with a further two due to be installed in an additional entrance that is to be built.

It is also hoped that the ground will be totally self-contained by the end of this year.

The second phase of the development will be to erect a new social club area, conference room and gymnasium, with plans looking to be passed before the end of the 2006/2007 season.

Although Glapwell are continuing to develop from within, the club will still be looking for further investment and should anyone be interested in getting involved in this friendly, but ambitious club then please contact Kevin Gee (Commercial Manager) on 07796 484 266.

Glapwell Double Signing Boost

9th October, 2006

Glapwell's squad has been boosted again with two significant signings.

33-year-old central defender Craig Gaunt signed last Tuesday from UniBond Premier Division outfit Ilkeston Town, who he had joined for a second spell from Leigh RMI in December 2004.

A player with bags of experience, he initially joined the Robins in 1997 but was originally a product of the FA's Centre of Excellence at Lilleshall and had spells with Arsenal, Huddersfield Town and Scarborough.

However, he never really made his mark, but moved on to find success in senior non-league football at Bromsgrove Rovers and Kettering Town.

He left Ilkeston after making only a handful of appearances to play in Singapore with Woodlands Wellington, but returned to have successful spells with Chester City and Hucknall Town before signing for the Railwaymen in June 2004.

20-year-old striker Ian Brown put pen to paper on Friday after being released this week by Hucknall Town, where he had struggled to break into the first team after joining them during the summer.

Before that, he had had three very successful seasons in amongst the goals at Sutton Town and, in joining Glapwell, renews his previous association with boss McJannet who first took him to the Snipes from the Mansfield Town Academy in 2003.

News of Brown's release by Hucknall caused a stir of interest amongst local clubs, but Glapwell were very pleased to secure his signature in the end despite nine other clubs chasing him, including two other NCEL Premier Division rivals, Sutton Town and Carlton Town.

Both players went straight into the starting line-up for Glapwell's 2-0 home win over Selby Town on Saturday.

And, Brown made an immediate impact as he scored the opener after just ten seconds.

Hollingworth In At Glapwell

6th September, 2006

Glapwell manager Les McJannet has taken another step towards rebuilding the side for this season.

McJannet has returned to his former club Sutton Town to land highly-rated left back Nathan Hollingworth, who appeared to have fallen out of favour with Snipes boss Lee Wilson.

Hollingworth joins Glapwell skipper Steve Roebuck, alongside whom he has played at both Hucknall Town and Sutton.

The new boy has also featured with distinction at Shirebrook Town.

Hollingworth, who is completing a week-long ban held over from last season, said that he was delighted to be rejoining his former boss, and praised the set-up at his new club.

"I'm looking forward to getting back playing and working with Les again," he said.

"There have been a lot of changes here, but it's a great set-up and good things are happening.

"I enjoyed my time at Sutton but the time has come to move on."

Roebuck hailed his old team mate as a great signing, and expressed his surprise that a man with 'the best left peg around these parts' was left out at Sutton.

"Their loss is Glapwell's gain," he added.

Roebuck Joins Glapwell

3rd August, 2006

Midfield-defender Steve Roebuck has joined his former Sutton Town boss Les McJannet at Glapwell.

Former Hucknall Town player Roebuck had contemplated quitting the game after completing four seasons at Sutton, but was persuaded by his father to play on.

"Les McJannet has been loyal to me over the years which is why I have followed him to Glapwell, in the hope that I can repay some of that faith he's had in me," he said.

Meanwhile, Glapwell are continuing their rebuilding after losing virtually all of last season's squad.

And, with McJannet's resumed partnership with Kevin Gee, things should start to look up again at Hall Corner.

Glapwell Land Hot Shot Johnson

19th July, 2006

Glapwell have been given a major boost ahead of the new season by landing the signature of former Shirebrook Town striker Simon Johnson.

The pacy, prolific front man was taken by former Hucknall Town manager John Ramshaw to his new charges at Hednesford Town towards the end of last season, but it is undestood that he left the New Cross Keys club because of the amount of travelling involved.

Johnson, 23, who also trialled for Conference North Alfreton Town last season, had attracted the interest of a number of other NCEL clubs, and it is understood that he was on the shopping list of Sutton Town, Gedling Town and Division One outfit South Normanton Athletic.

He has joined the Hall Corner club on a non-contract basis after new manager Les McJannet was forced into an almost total rebuild of the side with most of last season's squad having moved on.

"Simon is probably the best goal scorer at our level in the area," said McJannet, "so we are delighted to have got him here."

"He is very quick, puts defenders under pressure, and is also a good finisher," he added.

Rebuilding Starts At Hall Corner

10th July, 2006

With less than a month to the start of the 2006/07 campaign, Glapwell's new manager Les McJannet faces the daunting task of building a side almost from scratch.

All but one of last season's players walked out on the club during the close season.

Only Richard Smith has so far remained loyal to Glapwell, whilst defender Damien Magee has gone to Alfreton and midfielder Adam Walker to Ilkeston.

The majority of the rest have followed previous Glapwell manager Lee Wilson to McJannet's former club, NCEL Premier Division rivals Sutton Town.

The remaining players have either stepped down to Central Midlands football, not found a club yet or have quit Saturday football altogether.

And McJannet suffered a further setback this week when Jason Pascoe - who came with him from Sutton Town as his number two, along with Kip Garton as club physio - announced that he would not be able to fulfil his managerial duties at Glapwell due to work pressures, and was quitting as assistant manager.

However, the blow was softened a little when the experienced defender committed his name to the growing list of Glapwell players for the coming season.

Better news followed though, and McJannet and the club were boosted by the arrival at Hall Corner soon afterwards of Kevin Gee as assistant manager.

It revives a previously successful working relationship between the pair that only ended when Gee moved on from Sutton to become involved with youth development at Notts County some four years ago.

Recent changes at the Magpies, however, have forced Gee to look elsewhere for involvement in football and he was delighted to be working with his old pal once again.

Glapwell Football Club have not been idle off the field either this summer.

As well as the usual routine maintenance at Hall Corner to the playing surface and its surrounds; car parking and spectator access has been improved, and a smart new entrance for players and officials has been provided.

Work is also well underway to fully enclose the ground with the building of a wall on the southern boundary, and substantial new players' dugouts have been built.

All of this, including significant improvements to the clubhouse and office areas, and boosted with the addition of experienced ex-Sutton Town secretary Roger Keeling onto Glapwell's hard-working committee, will stand the club in good stead for eventual promotion to the UniBond League.
