Tough Week at Shirebrook, Admits Gee

13th November, 2013

Speaking after the Appleby Frodingham game on Saturday, new manager Kevin Gee was philosophical about the victory and was quickly moving on to thinking about Shirebrook?s next game.

After what he described had been a tough week at the Toolstation NCEL Division One club, Gee said: "Today has been really important for the players and supporters. After watching the first two games against Clipstone and Cleethorpes, I was really looking forward to the Teversal game that followed, as I felt that the settling-in period was over and the hard work could begin. But to say I was disappointed would be an under-statement.

"Admittedly the weather conditions didn't help, but all my principles and beliefs about how the basic game is to be played just weren't there and although it was a positive having the first clean sheet, it was more by luck than judgement as Teversal created the better chances. But at least it was something to build on for our first real training session the following Tuesday.

"However, the poor turnout for training, after not training for the past six weeks before I came to Shirebrook, only reinforced the deeper problems that the club had on the field and I just felt that it was time to start and change the dynamics if we were to have any chance of becoming a respected force in non-league circles again.

"At the moment the club is an upside down club, with everything off the field being run at Evo-Stik level and everything on it just ticking along, and it's my job to create a group of players on the pitch that match the aspirations off it.

"When you come into a new organisation mid-season, you have a three-pronged problem.

"Firstly, in the short term, I needed to find out who was prepared to give it a go with me as new manager and I'm delighted with those who have stayed.

"Secondly, I have to try and bring in new faces that can bond with the current group, but at the same time have an immediate impact and stop the run of poor results, and try and go on a bit of a run ourselves.

"Third and finally, I have to get the whole group to buy into the new management style, putting my own infrastructure in place for the 5-year project so that we just need to make slight adjustments each year, rather than a complete overhaul every summer.

"There has also been a new face in the dugout with me over the last couple of games, as I've bought in Ian 'Chalky' Whyte - who was my assistant at Rainworth - to have a look at the club and the vision that the club has long term, and to see if he would consider rejoining me.

"Having worked with Chalky over the last eighteen months at Rainworth, it was a heart-wrenching decision for both of us to walk away from that club so early this season, but it was one one that we both felt justifiable once the dynamics of the club changed in the summer.

"However, we have stayed in constant touch over the last six weeks, looking at the various opportunities put in front of us. But, as Chalky lives in Scunthorpe, he went to assist at Brigg Town in the Evo-Stik behind the scenes, as well as now working with Hull City in the Premiership, working with their Youth Team. So it would be difficult at the minute for him to commit to anything else.

"I have worked with some great coaches over my time and it's well versed that I believe Chalky is the best technician I've worked with. Having been a professional at Norwich City, he's been fortunate to work with all the big local professional clubs - Derby County, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest - as well as further afield at Portsmouth under Harry Redknapp.

"So, if Chalky did decide to join me and commit himself to this club, it would probably be one of the best signings I'll make for Shirebrook. However, with so much committed work on at the minute since leaving Rainworth, it may only be in an advisory role in the short term, until such time as he could possibly come on board full time.

"Also remaining on my backroom staff - and playing huge roles already - are the two most senior players Mark Camm and Danny Bacon, along with sports therapist Kay Humberstone as per her existing role.

"I must say a big thank you to Mark, Danny and Kay, who have all been a fantastic help in the transition since the club changed managers.

"And I know Mark and Danny both have aspirations to one day manage and/or coach in their own right, but at the minute they will have numerous roles within this club, first and foremost as first team players, as well as working alongside Chalky who will mentor both of them to improve them towards becoming exceptional coaches and managers over next three years.

"However, what is important with five members of staff is that it allows us to improve our networking of players both at park level on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as our own leagues and above, plus getting the chance to watch other teams in this division, as well as promoting the club in the community and in local schools.

"With the backroom staff sorted, and the players seeing what impact hard work, discipline and organisation can achieve with a result like today, I'm hopeful that we can now all settle down and try and get a bit of consistency going in our performances and start moving back up the league.

"Our first target will be to get within nine points of the second position by the halfway point of the season, which is five games away. At the minute we are twelve points off, so I think we are more than capable of achieving it. We will then reassess our position and set further targets as we go along.

"It's going to take a huge effort to try and claw our way back into the top two positions after an indifferent start, but we have to believe we can achieve it until it's mathematically impossible to fulfil.

"As for the Shirebrook fans, I must say a big thank you to them too as they have been tremendous in firstly welcoming me to the club and secondly supporting the players, irrespective of the performances.

"So it's very much small steps being put in place at the minute, but hopefully we will see a huge difference in the performances during the coming weeks, although that will of course have the occasional blip," Gee also warned.
