Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2013/14 #72
8th May, 2014
There was cup joy for Knaresborough Town and Athersley Recreation as both lifted silverware in dramatic fashion this week.
Knaresborough Town are this season's Toolstation NCEL League Cup winners following one of the best finals of recent years against fellow Division One side Eccleshill United.
The match, played at Bradford City's Coral Windows Stadium on Saturday, ended 2-2 after extra-time and a penalty shoot-out decided who would be the victors.
Colin Heath had put Knaresborough ahead on ten minutes but it was the Eagles who would lead at the interval as Charlie Flaherty and Marcus Edwards netted in quick succession.
But, parity was restored early in the second period as Heath grabbed his and Knaresborough's second.
That's how it stayed until the shoot-out which saw Knaresborough leading 3-2 going into the fifth set of spot kicks and Byron Littlefair kept his nerve to slot his home to clinch them the trophy.

Tuesday night saw Toolstation NCEL Premier Division side Athersley Recreation take on Evo-Stik League Premier Division outfit Frickley Athletic in the final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup which took place at Hillsborough.
And, the Rec upset the form book to beat their opponents from two divisions above them in the FA National League System and lift the trophy for the first time in their history.
Etching his name in the record books was Daniel Joynes whose goal on the half-hour separated the sides and sparked massive scenes of celebration at the final whistle.
