Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2013/14 #70
25th April, 2014
Brighouse Town were presented with the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division title whilst Cleethorpes Town were crowned the Division One champions in a dramatic final midweek of action in the 2013/14 season.
Brighouse, who had clinched the championship on Saturday, were beaten at home on Easter Monday by Bridlington Town, Jarrod Smalley's injury time strike the only goal of the game, but that did not stop the celebrations at full-time as the trophy was handed over to Paul Quinn's side.
In the day's other game, Athersley Recreation won 2-1 at Worksop Parramore, Joe Thornton and Lee Bennett with their goals at the end of the first half whilst Scott Bates netted in the 78th minute for the hosts.
Tuesday saw second-placed Shaw Lane Aquaforce draw 3-3 at home to Hemsworth Miners Welfare after racing into a two goal lead through Shane Kelsey and Danny Frost.
Jason Yates and Nicholas Guest restored parity by half-time and Guest's second, from the penalty spot, put the visitors ahead for the first time on the hour mark before Andrew Hart's injury time own goal saw the spoils shared.
Josh Prudhoe and Thomas Carr scored for Glasshoughton Welfare in their 2-0 home victory over Staveley Miners Welfare whilst it will be an all-Division One League Cup Final after Eccleshill United won 4-3 at Heanor Town.
Marcus Edwards scored all of the Eagles' goals, including two in the last ten minutes, as they came from behind to set up a clash with Knaresborough Town at Bradford City's Coral Windows Stadium on Saturday 3rd May.
On Wednesday, Bottesford Town drew 3-3 at Dronfield Town, Richard Mintoft's 80th minute own goal rescuing a point for the third-placed side, a result that confirmed that leaders Cleethorpes would finish in one of the top two promotion spots.
In the Premier Division, Long Eaton United won 2-1 at Bridlington Town, Jermaine Palmer with both of their goals whilst Rikki Paylor got on the scoresheet for the hosts.
And, on Thursday, Cleethorpes were confirmed as the champions of Division One as Shaw Lane Aquaforce, who needed a win to keep their title hopes alive, completed their fixture list with a 2-2 home draw at home to Knaresborough Town, Fraser Lancaster scoring an equaliser in the eighth minute of stoppage time for the visitors.
Aquaforce may have missed out on the title but they are virtually assured the second promotion spot, unless Bottesford win by a 20-goal margin at Grimsby Borough in their final game on Saturday.
In the Premier Division, Worksop Parramore won 3-1 at home to Staveley Miners Welfare and will be looking at claiming a top three spot in the last round of matches this weekend.
