Barton to stage World Cup anniversary match

19th July, 2016

Barton Town Old Boys are asking fans from all NCEL clubs to come and support a special charity match this weekend that celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of England's 1966 World Cup win.

They are urging supporters to bring their club and England flags, and display them with pride at the ground to show their combined support/celebration for our nation's greatest footballing achievement.

Both teams will be wearing 1966 style 'replica' kits for the game. They will be as close as possible to the original England and West Germany kits, squad numbers in the correct fonts and colours, Banks' yellow keeper shirt with the red number 1, etc.

There will be a match day programme with a nod to the original 1966 souvenir programme.

The Event is on Sunday 24th July, 2016, 3pm ko with gates open at 2pm at Barton's Euronics Ground. Fans are being asked to arrive in plenty of time.

Admission will be ?2 for adults and free to children.

The charities being supported are Macmillan Cancer Support and The Bobby Moore Fund (Cancer Research).

There will be children's entertainment with perimeter bouncy castle, face painting and balloon modelling whilst the Barton Town Band (ensemble) shall be playing the national anthems and there will be a raffle to win the shirts worn by the players.

There will also be an auction involving a framed England shirt, signed by hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst.

Food and refreshments will be served in the clubhouse, including German beers, wines and frankfurters, etc.

The Swans' Club in the Community Officer Owen Taylor said: "I hope we all can recapture the spirit of 1966 and come down and support what should be an afternoon of great fun.

"For many fans this is the closest we may get to see a 'World Cup Final'.

"As the song says 'It's coming home, it's coming, football's coming home'. Well, it's coming to Barton at least.

"Hopefully history repeats itself and 'England' win the trophy."
