NCEL Match Review #56
8th March, 2009
All three of the top sides in the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division won on Saturday with none of them giving up the title chase easily.
Mickleover Sports maintain an eleven point lead over Selby Town whilst Long Eaton United are a further point behind in third.
But, with the two sides below them having two and three games in hand respectively, Sports know that the crown is not in their possession yet.
They picked up their three points at Armthorpe Welfare but it took until the 87th minute for them to claim their 1-0 victory, Dave Middleditch getting the winner.
Selby were far more comprehensive with a 5-0 win at next-to-bottom Lincoln Moorlands Railway, thanks mainly to a second half hat-trick from James McDaid.
That was after Sam Agar had given them a half-time lead and Brenton Leister struck from the penalty spot on 47 minutes.
Long Eaton United got both their goals at Shirebrook Town in the first half, Paul Gamble and Kevin Mabon netting in their 2-0 win.
Bridlington Town could still have a say as they climb to fourth after a 6-0 drubbing of visitors Arnold Town, a defeat that surely now means the title challenge is over for the Eagles.
All Brid's goals came after the interval with two each for Craig Palmer and Chibuzor Chilaka whilst Frank Belt converted a spot kick and Ashley Allanson hit the sixth and final goal in injury time.
They go above Arnold and Pickering Town who lost 2-0 at seventh-placed Thackley, Chris Coy finding the net in each half to stay at the top of the Premier Division scorers' chart with 28.
A month ago, Eccleshill United's survival hopes looked in ruins but they picked up their second win in their last four matches to move to within four points of safety.
They condemned hosts Hall Road Rangers to their seventh successive league defeat with a 5-2 victory that ended with Steve Richards resigning as Rangers boss.
Hall Road played most of the second half with nine men having had Jamie Barnwell sent off in the first period and then Martin Thacker received his marching orders soon after the interval.
Andy Howland scored twice for Eccleshill whilst Andy Philp, Tom Didd and Marcus Edwards also netted for what was only their third league win of the campaign.
Andy Markham's injury-time winner was joy for Winterton Rangers and heartache for eighteenth-placed Brodsworth Welfare as the hosts finished as 4-3 victors.
Dinnington Town and Hallam both won comfortably at home with a 3-0 victory over Nostell Miners Welfare and a 4-1 win against Parkgate, respectively.
And, Adam Shepherd's 66th minute goal saw Maltby Main move up to eleventh after a 1-0 win at Liversedge.
Scarborough Athletic are now fourteen points clear at the top of Division One and could be promoted by the end of play on Saturday.
They came from behind to win 3-1 at Hemsworth Miners Welfare, thanks to Daniel Gray, Ryan Blott - his 32nd Division One goal of the season - and Richard Medcalf, making it fifteen victories out of fifteen for the Seadogs.
Second-placed Askern Villa were not in action and there was a surprise for Rainworth Miners Welfare in third as they were held to a 1-1 draw at bottom side Glasshoughton Welfare.
Indeed, the Wrens needed a 77th-minute equaliser from Ant Lynam to stop them being the first team to lose to Welfare this season in the league.
Sam Harrison had struck just before the half-hour to put Glasshoughton ahead.
That all means that if Scarborough win on Wednesday at Grimsby Borough and then, on Saturday, they beat visitors Worsbrough Bridge Athletic and Rainworth fail to win at home to Hemsworth then Athletic will have booked a place in next season's Premier Division.
It is still unclear as to who else will be in line for promotion after the remaining three sides in the top six, Pontefract Collieries, AFC Emley and Barton Town Old Boys, all failed to win.
Ponte drew 1-1 at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic but the hosts levelled the match with an Anthony Clarke injury time equaliser.
AFC Emley drew 0-0 at Rossington Main and Barton Town Old Boys went down 2-0 at Bottesford Town with the hosts' goals scored in the second half by James Leech and Daniel Hope.
Leeds Carnegie climb to ninth with a 3-0 win over Appleby Frodingham whilst a Jack Debnam brace saw Grimsby Borough win 2-0 at Tadcaster Albion.
And, Rob Orton struck in injury time to give Teversal a 2-1 home victory over Yorkshire Amateur to keep them in eleventh place.
