NCEL Match Review #52
22nd February, 2009
Mickleover Sports are now six points clear at the top of the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division following a 3-1 victory at Liversedge.
The game was halted for over half-an-hour due to an injury to the home side's goalkeeper.
Mitchell Smith was accidentally caught when trying to drop on the ball.
A club spokesperson said: "He had a pins and needles feeling down his right side and, wisely, our physio Kate Allen decided to keep his head and neck still until the ambulance came and braced him up and took him for an x-ray."
There was a happy ending, though, as he was back at the clubhouse fit-and-well by six o'clock.
On the pitch, Sports came from behind with goals from Ricky Law, Kieran O'Connell and Dave Middleditch.
That was after Brook Newton had given the hosts, who drop to thirteenth, the lead on 32 minutes.
Pickering Town, who were Sports' closest rivals, are now third after their were beaten 3-2 at home by Maltby Main.
Chris Batchelor had put the Pikes in the lead on 24 minutes before a Rob Branagan brace had turned the game in the visitors' favour by the early part of the second period.
Liam Salt levelled matters for the home side but Adam Shepherd grabbed the winner with four minutes remaining.
Pickering are replaced in second place by Selby Town who won 2-0 at Dinnington Town thanks to a second-half Brenton Leister double, the second being from the penalty spot.
Bridlington Town move up to fourth after a 4-1 win at home to struggling Brodsworth Welfare.
The game was level going into the last sixteen minutes after Liam Slack's 61st minute strike for Welfare had cancelled out Ashley Dexter's early opener.
Chibuzor Chilaka struck twice, however, whilst Gareth Slater got on the scoresheet to make it a one-sided scoreline.
The Seasiders go above Arnold Town who drew 1-1 at Hallam, Nick Hall scoring their equaliser after the hosts had taken a 26th minute lead courtesy of James Tevendale.
Sixth-placed Long Eaton United kept themselves with an outside chance of having a say on the title race after a 1-0 win at Hall Road Rangers, with Paul Gamble's 80th minute penalty separating the sides.
At the foot of the table, bottom side Eccleshill United had an afternoon to forget as they failed to build on their midweek victory over Parkgate in spectacular style.
They fell to the season's biggest defeat as they lost 9-0 at Armthorpe Welfare.
Liam Hardy grabbed a first-half hat-trick and Bruno Holden also scored to leave the hosts four-up by the break.
And the misery continued after the interval for the Eagles with Holden adding once more to his tally whilst Henry Sibenge hit two and Stuart Preston and Craig Sutton found the net as well.
Eccleshill are now four points adrift after the side above them, Lincoln Moorlands Railway, won 1-0 at Shirebrook Town, a last-minute penalty from Nick Robinson earning them their first away victory of the campaign.
Chris Coy scored a 22-minute hat-trick in the first-half of Thackley's home game with Parkgate as his side won 3-1, the visitors grabbing a late consolation through Daniel Payne.
And, Winterton Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Nostell Miners Welfare after they had taken the lead on 20 minutes from Greg Archer.
Dave Watts scored soon after the half-hour mark to claim a point for Welfare who go up to fifteenth.
Craig Hogg's winner four minutes from time saw Scarborough Athletic maintain their eleven point lead at the top of Division One.
Their game at Leeds Carnegie was threatening to end as a draw after Athletic's Daniel Gray had cancelled out Matt Chiltern's opener for the home side but the Seadogs went home with a 2-1 victory.
The race for second spot continues to gather pace with Askern Villa winning 2-1 at Tadcaster Albion to keep themselves in pole position.
Daniel Ferguson scored both their goals after their hosts had taken the lead via a 26th-minute goal from Chris Harkin.
The other favourites for promotion are Rainworth Miners Welfare who climb to fourth with games in hand after a 4-1 victory at Brighouse Town.
Danny Bainbridge and Julian McDonald both struck twice for Rudy Funk's side whilst Joe Pinnock found the net for Brighouse.
The Wrens stay eight points behind Askern Villa but have played three games less.
Pontefract Collieries and AFC Emley lost ground in the chase for a top two spot as they both tasted defeat.
Third-placed Ponte fell to a surprising 1-0 defeat at home to Rossington Main who move up to seventeenth after their victory that came courtesy of a Lee Holmes goal thirteen minutes from time.
And, despite a Steve Kenworthy goal, AFC Emley drop to fifth after losing 2-1 at Bottesford Town - Edwin Turay and Jamie Smith scored for the hosts.
Barton Town Old Boys will still feel they can have a say in who goes up as they won 4-1 at bottom side Glasshoughton Welfare.
They are eleven points off second spot but, like Rainworth, have three games in hand of Askern.
Daniel Ellerby's goal eight minutes from the end was the winner in Appleby Frodingham's 3-2 win at Hemsworth Miners Welfare to move them up to eleventh in the table.
A Lee Gregory hat-trick saw Staveley Miners Welfare easily deal with Yorkshire Amateur as the home side won 5-1 to cement tenth place.
And, Teversal climb to thirteenth after Warren Smith's 69th-minute strike earned them a single-goal victory at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
