Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #41

17th December, 2023

Hallam and Silsden AFC were both victorious in the Isuzu FA Vase on Saturday to make it three Toolstation NCEL clubs through to the Fourth Round, the league's best showing in the competition since 2015.

After a fortnight of barely any action due to bad weather, it was a relief to get all but two of the weekend's fixtures played with only Armthorpe Welfare's home clash with Retford United and Wombwell Town's trip to Clay Cross Town, both in Division One, called off due to waterlogged pitches.

Calum Ward's 86th minute strike edged a close match for Hallam as they won 1-0 against Ramsbottom United, in a game that had been switched to the Countrymen's Sandygate ground.

Silsden had also been given home advantage in their tie with Newcastle University that was reversed to the Office Interiors Stadium and a 4-2 victory means they are also through to the last 32.

Jake Cassidy's opener was added to in the first half by Ellis Hudson's penalty before further goals after the interval from Kayle Price and Isaac Baldwin sealed the Cobbydalers' progression.

Hallam and Silsden join Emley AFC in the Fourth Round that takes place in January.

In the Premier Division, Campion's lead at the summit remains at four points following their 4-1 win at Tadcaster Albion.

Patrick Sykes and Nicky Boshell had given them a two goal cushion by the break before a third came from Daniel Illingworth early in the second period.

Oliver Norman pulled on back for the Brewers on 65 minutes but Mark Ferguson halted any thoughts of a comeback with the visitors' fourth in the final quarter-of-an-hour.

Second placed Emley won by the same scoreline at home to Eccleshill United, James Walshaw, Ruben Jerome and James Eyles' strikes added to by an own goal by Jahro Parchment whilst Brice Ghussein netted for the visiting Eagles.

Matthew Dempsey's 58th minute decider earned Thackley a 2-1 win at Pickering Town that moves them up into third, after George Green's opener had been cancelled out by Kieran Stares for the hosts.

Garforth Town are up to fourth after a brace from Sam Barker and one each for Jordan Emery, Charlie Marshall and Jason Davis secured a 5-1 victory at Penistone Church in the division's Friday night game.

A 3-1 home loss for Albion Sports sees them fall to fifth, Aran Basi putting the Lions ahead on 33 minutes before Buddy Cox, Josimar Bradshaw and Oliver Russon netted to give Golcar United a win that moves them up into twelfth.

Leon Howarth struck the only goal of the game as Handsworth defeated visitors Maltby Main, the Ambers now sixth in the table whilst their opponents remain next-to-bottom, just outside of the basement on goal difference to Goole AFC who were beaten 4-0 at home by Knaresborough Town.

Danny Edwards' hat-trick, after Lewis Stephens had broken the deadlock, ensured three points for the visitors who are up to tenth.

And, there were also three goals for Thomas Waudby as Barton Town came from behind to win 4-1 at home to Frickley Athletic.

Wakefield AFC edged a 3-2 victory in a closely-fought affair at Dronfield Town to extend their lead at the top of Division One.

Max Rhodes had put the hosts ahead with a 21st minute penalty before the scores were levelled in stoppage time through Jaydan Sandhu.

Mason Rubie and Oliver Clarke gave Wakefield a 3-1 advantage going into the last five minutes but Oliver Townsend struck for Dronfield to make it a nervy last few minutes at the HE Barnes Stadium.

The gap to the summit is now six points after Shirebrook Town drew 2-2 at Glasshoughton Welfare, the Derbyshire side requiring a late brace from Marcus Day to rescue something from the game after Joshua Winn had struck twice for the hosts.

Parkgate leap Shirebrook into second after Jamie Austin's strike ensured a 1-0 win for the Steelmen at Retford FC whilst Joe McFadyen, Luke Scaife and Conner Harman netted for Beverley Town as they beat hosts Harrogate Railway Athletic 3-0 to climb up to fourth.

Horbury Town were also 3-0 winners to finish the weekend in seventh, their victory over visitors Nostell Miners Welfare on Friday night coming courtesy of James Cusworth, Abdul Asamoah and Curtis Senior.

There were defeats for the bottom two as basement side Ollerton Town were beaten 3-0 at Athersley Recreation, Callum Clark, Khalid Suleiman and Oliver McQuillin with goals in a game that was scoreless until the 69th minute.

Swallownest, meanwhile, went down 1-0 at Brigg Town, Ben Vasquez with the 59th minute winner for the Zebras.

Staveley Miners Welfare were 4-2 victors at Yorkshire Amateur with Mackenzie Ross, Jack Deakin and Joshua Pickering scoring for the Trojans who were also helped to the win by an own goal.

And, Harry Clapham got both of Selby Town's goals in a 2-2 home draw with Louth Town, bookending strikes from Joshua Parker and Kieran Perry for the visitors.
