Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2016/17 #70

13th April, 2017

Armthorpe Welfare have been relegated from the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division whilst Cleethorpes Town moved three points closer to the title on Tuesday night.

Welfare, who needed to win to keep their slim hopes alive of staying up, went ahead at home to Bridlington Town through Gary Collier in the third minute.

But, Jake Day levelled for the Seasiders and Brett Agnew scored his 36th goal of the season to put the visitors 2-1 by the interval, and that is how the scoreline stayed, condemning Armthorpe to the drop whilst keeping Bridlington in with a narrow mathematical chance of lifting the title.

However, Cleethorpes show no sign in stopping their surge to be crowned champions as they won 3-0 at Clipstone, Alexander Flett's first half double added to in the last twenty minutes of the game by Leigh Hutchinson.

That means the Owls are five points clear of second placed Pickering Town who have three games left to play and could extend that gap to eight with victory on Thursday night at Bottesford Town.

Barton Town Old Boys remain in the drop zone after a 2-2 home draw with Athersley Recreation, James Williamson's ninth minute opener for the hosts cancelled out quickly by Kai Hancock before the Swans themselves had to come from behind, Edward Rogerson levelling after Samuel Bebbington had put the visitors ahead.

That leaves Barton a point from safety with two games remaining whilst the side they are chasing, Parkgate, have three matches left to play.

And, Handsworth Parramore and Thackley stay in fourth and fifth, respectively, after home victories.

Alex Rippon and the division's top scorer Aaron Moxam netted for Handsworth in a 2-0 defeat of Garforth Town whilst a Mike Garrod brace helped Thackley beat Hemsworth Miners Welfare, 3-1, Ryan Farrell with the other goal after the away side had taken a fourth minute lead through Richard Collier.

Meanwhile, there was one game in Division One on Wednesday night as already relegated Westella & Willerby went down to a 2-0 home loss to midtable Yorkshire Amateur, Matthew Dalton and Chris Hutchings scoring in the second period.
