Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2016/17 #43

8th January, 2017

Cleethorpes Town have booked their place in the last sixteen of this season's Buildbase FA Vase with an excellent 2-1 win at Ebac Northern League side Billingham Town on Saturday.

The Owls raced into a two goal lead with Andrew Taylor and Brody Robertson netting in the opening twenty minutes and, although the hosts did all they could to get back into the game and scored through Chris Dickinson, Marcus Newell's side held on to go into Monday's Fifth Round draw.

Sadly, they will not be joined by AFC Mansfield who bowed out with a 1-0 home loss to Northern League visitors Sunderland RCA, John Butler's goal towards the end of the first half proving enough to separate the sides.

With Cleethorpes' focus elsewhere, the chasing pack had a chance to close the gap a little on the runaway Toolstation NCEL Premier Division leaders and it was an opportunity taken by all three of the other top four sides.

Billy Logan's brace along with goals for Alex Robinson, Nicholas Thompson and Lewis Taylor helped second placed Pickering Town to a 5-0 home win over basement side Barton Town Old Boys and the Pikes are now nine points off the summit with two games in hand.

George Eustance ensured that Thackley retained third spot with his winner at Clipstone after the hosts' Andrew Fox cancelled out Daniel Broadbent's opener, the visitors ending up with a 2-1 triumph to keep them a point behind Pickering.

And, Bridlington Town stay fourth following their 4-2 defeat of visitors Bottesford Town, second half goals from Joel Sutton and Brett Agnew tipping the game in their favour after it was all square at the interval.

Albion Sports climb to fifth with a 4-2 home victory over Rainworth Miners Welfare, above Handsworth Parramore who drew 2-2 at home to Armthorpe Welfare, Liam Radford netting twice for the visitors in the second period after first half strikes from Jon Froggatt and Reece Hands for the hosts.

Athersley Recreation snatched a dramatic win at Harrogate Railway Athletic, Kai Hancock's second of the afternoon coming in stoppage time as a 4-3 victory kept them in eighth, ahead of Staveley Miners Welfare who are up to ninth following their 2-0 win at next-to-bottom Retford United.

Shaun Nesbitt and Joshua Schofield got on the scoresheet for Staveley whilst Retford now find themselves six points away from safety due to Armthorpe's draw.

Parkgate also remain in the drop zone despite picking up a point at Hemsworth Miners Welfare, Joshua Dacre levelling on 23 minutes after Nicholas Guest had opened the hosts' account.

And, a hat-trick for Mark Simpson helped Garforth Town to a 5-1 away win at Maltby Main that moves the Miners six points clear of the bottom seven.

In Division One, AFC Emley won their top-of-the-table clash at home to Penistone Church to open the gap with their nearest rivals to eight points.

Brett Lovell had put the visitors ahead in the 36th minute but parity was restored by Aaron Joseph after the hour mark and Ashley Flynn continued his remarkable scoring streak by getting the winner, his 42nd goal of the season.

Third placed Grimsby Borough missed out on a chance to leapfrog Penistone as, despite Daniel Trott's early double putting them 2-0 up at Ollerton Town, they were pegged back by George Pearse and Matthew Thompson for a 2-2 draw.

Hall Road Rangers went above Pontefract Collieries, whose match at next-to-bottom Westella & Willerby was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, into fourth with a 5-0 victory at Glasshoughton Welfare.

Christopher Spinks' first half penalty was added to in the second period by goals from Joe Cooper, Jacob Vernon, James Piercy and Gareth Owen, leaving Rangers now just a point off the top two.

Hallam continue to occupy the final play-off place as two goals from Steve Brammer along with strikes from Tom Roebuck and Callum Greaves claimed a 4-0 home victory over Brigg Town.

The Sandygate side are now four points clear of seventh placed Campion who went down 1-0 at Shirebrook Town, Mitchell Dunne with the only goal of the game around the hour mark.

Connor Prestley's late equaliser earned bottom side Nostell Miners Welfare a 2-2 home draw with Knaresborough Town, slightly closing the gap to safety to nine points as Worsbrough Bridge Athletic went down 2-0 to visitors Yorkshire Amateur.

Two goals from Rob Northen helped Winterton Rangers to a 4-0 defeat of visitors Dronfield Town whilst Eccleshill United came from behind to win 3-2 at home to Teversal and Selby Town beat Rossington Main, 3-1, at the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium.
