Rudy's Farewell To NCEL

20th May, 2010

Rainworth Miners Welfare boss Rudy Funk has paid tribute to the NCEL as his club prepares for the move up to the Evo-Stik League.

He was full of praise to all concerned, but especially to champions Bridlington Town, whose decision not to accept the step up cleared the way for the Wrens.

Said Funk: "I must first of all say a massive thank-you to Bridlington who played a big part in what we achieved this season - not just because of the points they took from our closest rivals in the final weeks, but because throughout most of the season we have been neck and neck with them, along with Armthorpe, and made it a tremendous contest.

To top it off Bridlington became champions and we were runners-up, and after they declined promotion our own battle started.

"I'm absolutely delighted and proud for the lads because every single point they earned was vital in getting us up in the points per game stakes for runners-up clubs. The points they gained ensured that we finished highest of the three runners-up competing for two promotion places.

"Looking back on our stay in the NCEL I would like to say a big thank you to every single club, in both divisions. I'm hugely impressed by what I have seen on the field and behind the scenes at various clubs within the league.

"The NCEL is a very tough league, and that includes Division One as well as the Premier Division.

"I've learned so many things. I've learned that many clubs have some fantastic people who work extremely hard behind the scenes. When I look at different sides I can see great potential.

"I can't go through and highlight every club, but just as an example let's take Brighouse Town. Since we played them in Division One I've been back there a few times and have been impressed by the way they play their football, and the way they behave as a club.

"Another club which springs to mind is Staveley. I have enormous respect for what Terry Damms has done there. He's not just built a team there, he's built a very good club.

"And at my former club Teversal I can see the new management there taking them forward.

"In the Premier Division, look at the Armthorpes, Thackleys , Long Eatons, they are all just wonderful clubs, and to play in a league alongside the likes of Scarborough and Bridlington makes it a real mouth-watering competition.

"I'd also like to praise the chairman and officials of the NCEL, and everyone who has been involved , and every other club who has made us so welcome as we have gone around the league in these last three years. It all helps to make it such a wonderful football league.

"I hope we will fly the NCEL flag with pride in our new league, as so many other clubs before us have done in the past.

"Many thanks to each and every one of you."

Wrens Promotion Confirmed

17th May, 2010

The KoolSport NCEL would like to congratulate Rainworth Miners Welfare whose promotion to the Evo-Stik League has been confirmed by the FA today.

The loudest cheer at their annual presentation night in the Welfare on Saturday night was heard when manager Rudy Funk announced that he had been given special dispensation ahead of today's official release to tell the audience that the club had been officially promoted to Step 4 on the National League System.

Wrens players and officials had been sweating on the FA decision on the make-up of the leagues from Step 1 to 4, which had been due last Thursday but was deferred until today, with an embargo placed on the club not to release the information to the media ahead of the FA's own announcement.

The decision makes Rainworth the first ever Miners' Welfare club to reach Step 4, although other clubs at that level and above, including Hucknall Town and Frickley Athletic, are both former Colliery Welfare outfits.

Rainworth had finished second to Bridlington in their first season as a Step 5 club and, when the Seasiders announced that they would not accept promotion it became a case of 'wait and see' whether the Wrens would be allowed to make the expected step up in Bridlington's place.

Now that he knows his club will be competing in Division One South of the Evo-Stik (formerly UniBond) League, manager Funk can at last set his sights on competing at the next level, after leading the ambitious Wrens to their third promotion in four seasons.

"I'm absolutely ecstatic about it and just can't put into words how pleased I am," he said. "I'm delighted for the football club and the whole community that we will be seeing Northern Premier League football at Kirklington Road next season.

"Five years ago when Billy Millar and I arrived at Rainworth we promised to bring UniBond League football to the club, and that has now been achieved, so we must now look to our next target - because this is still not the limit of achievement for this club, and we have now surely surpassed even anything achieved by that great 1982 Wembley team.

"It's like a big fairy tale, that we will now be rubbing shoulders with massive clubs like Leek Town, Witton Albion and others, as well as Glapwell who will be our local derby rivals. This club has grown so big, so strong, that next season every game will be a big game.

"There are so many people, far too many to mention but from Billy Millar to everyone behind the scenes, people who have supported us financially and through the gates, who have all played their part and done so much to bring us to the level which we have now attained, and to make the club what it has become.

"We are not a rich club, but we have a massive heart and that will stand us in good stead for the new challenge.

"People laughed at me when I set our initial target of reaching this level, and they may well laugh again when I mention the word 'Conference', but I genuinely believe that is an achievable target in the years to come."

In the absence of chairman Derek Blow, vice-chairman Brian Reece added: "I'm thrilled that we have been promoted again, and trust that we will do justice to our new status. I also hope that we will attract more Rainworth people to our matches now we are at the higher level."

Promotion means that Rainworth's long standing love affair with the FA Vase is over, for they will be entered into the FA Trophy for next season.

Wrens Ready For Evo-Stik Chance

6th May, 2010

KoolSport NCEL runners-up Rainworth MW are preparing for life in the Northern Premier League next season after champions Bridlington Town declined promotion this week.

Bridlington chairman Peter Smurthwaite formally notified the Football Association this week that the Seasiders had opted to stay put in the NCEL because of the travelling involved for his club at the higher level. [See story here.]

Rainworth's promotion still has to be ratified by the Football Association, but it is expected to be a formality, given the National League System rules on promotion from Step 5 to Step 4.

There are fourteen leagues including the NCEL at Step 5 of the National Leagues System, but only twelve promotion places from Step 5 to Step 4.

This season the champions of four of those leagues have either not applied for promotion, withdrawn their application, or failed to achieve a satisfactory ground grading.

This means that the remaining ten champion clubs will be promoted, along with the two runners-up clubs from the remaining four leagues who have applied for promotion and have the best points per game record.

Runners-up can only be promoted from leagues whose champions are not going up.

Of those four leagues, the Northern League runners-up Shildon did not apply for promotion, so the remaining three - Wimborne Town (Wessex League), Witham Town (Essex Senior League) and Rainworth (NCEL) were left to contest the two places on a points per game basis.

In that, the Wrens were second behind Wimborne but ahead of Witham who will miss out unless a further place becomes available by other means.

It will be Rainworth's third promotion in four seasons, and fulfils the promise made by manager Rudy Funk on his appointment to bring UniBond football (as it then was) to Kirklington Road - a promise made at a time when they had only avoided relegation from the Central Midlands Supreme Division because other clubs were demoted for not meeting floodlighting deadlines.

Funk, along with assistant manager Billy Millar and coaches Mark Place, succeeded by Les McJannet, have transformed the club during their five-year stint at Kirklington Road.

The manager paid tribute to Bridlington, saying: "They are without a doubt the best team in the NCEL - their record proves that - and they did us two massive favours in beating our closest rivals Armthorpe and Thackley rather than easing off after their title was confirmed.

"Now in a way they have done us another favour, but Peter Smurthwaite, who is a close personal friend, has also done what he believes is the right thing for his club, which would have faced a massive travelling bill had they accepted promotion.

"As for us, assuming that the FA ratify our promotion, we will be ready for this next challenge in the ongoing development of our club."

Chairman Derek Blow, welcoming the likelihood of promotion, added: "I hope we can attract more people from within the Rainworth community to our matches next season, because I don't think people realise what a great club they have in their village."

Wrens Strengthen for Title Push

3rd February, 2010

Premier Division title hopefuls Rainworth Miners Welfare have strengthened their squad for the run-in to the end of the season with the acquisition of two players.

Free-scoring Hallam hotshot Simon Asquith, who has scored 24 goals in all competitions for the Sheffield side this season, put pen to paper last Thursday night.

And, last night, Glapwell's experienced and much travelled midfielder Asa Ingall became the latest recruit as the Wrens seek to strengthen their bid to bring UniBond League football to Kirklington Road.

Neither were eligible to play in the 2-1 Notts Senior Cup victory over neighbours Teversal, but both will go straight into the squad to visit Parkgate on Saturday.

Commenting on the signings, manager Rudy Funk said: "Simon Asquith is an unbelievable signing. Everyone in the league is aware of his ability as a terrific goal scorer, and I'm looking forward to seeing him alongside Massiah McDonald, or Ant Lynam, and the extra options he will bring to the attack are endless.

"Asa has joined from Glapwell, but he's been around in the UniBond League with Sheffield, Brigg, Goole, Belper Town and Eastwood Town and will bring a wealth of experience and great leadership in the middle of the park."

Meanwhile, Rainworth's bid for promotion continues with their Kirklington Road stadium having been inspected for Step 4 level on Monday.

Although the official report is awaited, the ground graders said how impressed they were by the facilities, but have nevertheless given the club a few tasks to carry out, none of which is likely to be any major problem, in advance of the 31st March deadline.

Wrens Appoint Les, Apply for UniBond

17th November, 2009

Former Sutton Town and Glapwell manager Les McJannet has formalised his position with Rainworth Miners Welfare after helping out in an unofficial capacity this season.

The one-time Mansfield Town and Darlington defender McJannet was shown the door by UniBond League Glapwell at the end of last season despite guiding the Hall Corner club to the brink of the Division One South Play-offs in their first season at that level after leading them to promotion from the NCEL a year earlier.

Although he has been helping the Wrens' management team since the start of the current campaign, his position was never made official because his ultimate wish is to return to management and his time at Rainworth was designed to keep him in the shop window.

But, the club believe it is right that his work should be recognised and he is now officially first team coach.

Manager Rudy Funk said: "Les is a terrific lad. He and we keep looking around to get him back into management because that's where he deserves to be, but in the meantime he is doing a job here and has committed himself to us for the time being."

Meanwhile, the Wrens have formally indicated their intention to apply to step up to the UniBond League, should they finish in a promotion position at the end of the season.

When Funk and assistant Billy Millar took over at Kirklington Road just over four years ago they stated that their avowed intention was to guide the club through the NCEL and into the UniBond, so Funk is naturally delighted by this development, although there is only one promotion spot.

He said: "It's wonderful that we are making formal application to join the UniBond League because that was our declared intention when we first came to Rainworth. There can't be much to be done to the ground to get up to the next step, so we hope that come the end of the season the team is ready, the ground is ready and we are all ready."

Work has already been carried out on a few identified minor areas where the Kirklington Road arena may have fallen a little short.

And, club officials are confident that ground grading will not be a problem should they finish in a position to make the step up.

Funk Urges Jemson Backing

3rd November, 2009

Rainworth Miners Welfare's managers have urged the club's supporters to support Nigel Jemson and appreciate what he brings to the side.

The former Forest and Sheffield Wednesday star played a big role in their 1-0 win over local rivals Shirebrook Town at the weekend.

However, some fans remain unsure about his worth - something that Rudy Funk says he and his fellow boss, Billy Millar, want to end.

He said: "I wish people would get off Nigel's back. He's 40 years old, but if Nigel hadn't made that deciding goal it would have finished 0-0 and we would have had one point, not three.

"His vision played Jamie Whitehead in and what a great finish it was. And that's why we've kept Nigel on the park for the full 90 minutes.

"We did ask ourselves whether to make the change, but we know he's got in his locker the ability to set up the killer goal. He's done that and earned us the three points. And that is the difference he makes.

"He's won every header, and a couple of times when we sent on Massiah McDonald for the second half some of Nigel's ball play to him was a delight.

"We realise it will be physically impossible for him to play that pace week in week out, but he keeps on re-assuring us that he is up to it physically, and said today that it was the best he had felt for a long time so let's see that continue."

Jemson Explains 'Why Rainworth'

1st November, 2009

Former Premier League player Nigel Jemson has been explaining why he is now turning out for Rainworth Miners Welfare.

When he put pen to paper for the Wrens last month, the 40-year-old became unquestionably the biggest 'name' player ever to join the Wrens, and the first ever Rainworth player to have previously figured regularly at the highest level of football in England.

Spotted by Brian Clough while still a trainee at Preston North End, Jemson joined Nottingham Forest in 1988 and, after three successful years at the City Ground, was sold to Sheffield Wednesday for ?800,000.

In an interview for the Rainworth website Jemson said he had been attracted to Rainworth first and foremost by manager Rudy Funk, and by the obvious ambition of the club.

He admitted: "I almost joined Rainworth last season, until the offer came along from Halifax, who are in a higher league with a bigger stadium etc, but I was finding the travelling there a bit too much.

"Arnold came in for me during the summer, but unfortunately things didn't quite work out there for reasons I don't want to go into, but I'd kept in touch with Rudy, he spoke to me again, and I'm pleased to be here."

Sometimes big name players who are used to playing in front of 30,000 or so may find it hard to adjust to dropping into non-League and appearing before a few dozen, but Jemson insisted he is not the type of player who goes into non-League for an easy ride.

Asked how he motivates himself in these circumstances, he said: "The motivation is that I love football. I'm 40 years of age but I still enjoy playing, and even though I may not be as fast or as lively as I was I still believe I can give something back to the game. And I will continue to play for as long as I think that.

"If the time comes when I become a laughing stock then that will be the time to hang up my boots, but while I still have something to offer I hope I can do a job with Rainworth. If I can, and hopefully help the club to promotion, then that will be brilliant.

"There is a great bunch of lads here who have made me very welcome, I trained with them for the first time last week, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so I hope they will continue to take to me."

Wrens Release Hollingworth

6th October, 2009

Rainworth Miners Welfare have released defender Nathan Hollingworth and cancelled his registration at the player's own request.

The popular left back missed most of last season through injury, and has struggled to find a place in the side since his recovery this season.

After remaining on the bench as an unused substitute in the midweek victory over Selby Town, Hollingworth spoke to manager Rudy Funk and requested that his registration be cancelled.

Funk said: "Nathan is a player for whom I have the utmost respect, and I could quite understand his wish to move on.

"I would like to say a massive thank-you to him for his contribution to Rainworth. He has been an excellent servant to the club whenever he has been able to play, and whoever gets him will have a very good player.

"I just hope he is able to regain full fitness so that he will be able to enjoy his football once again.

"He is now free to sign for anyone, and if I can do anything to help him find a suitable club then I will be pleased to help him so that he can go and get some football under his belt again."

Meanwhile, a Rainworth XI came from 3-0 down at half time to draw 3-3 with a Church Warsop MW XI in a charity match on Sunday for the Tony Nattriss Memorial Trophy.

Prior to his tragic recent death in a road accident, Tony - brother of former Rainworth player Glen - had received treatment in Nottingham City Hospital renal unit, and the match was arranged in his memory to raise funds for the unit.

A bumper crowd of 305 turned up to Kirklington Road to watch the match, in which both sides included a number of guest players.

Glen played 45 minutes for each side, and ironically finished up on the wrong side of a 3-0 scoreline in each half!

Some ?600 was taken on the gate, and while the final figure is not yet known, it is understood that raffles and other events in the Miners' Welfare Club after the match boosted the total amount raised for the unit to over ?4,000.

Members of Tony's family have expressed their thanks to both clubs for a wonderful event.

Wrens FA Cup Appeal Fails

30th September, 2009

Rainworth Miners Welfare's appeal against their FA Cup exit at the weekend has been rejected.

They claimed that the referee failed to add on insufficient time despite a couple of long stoppages during their 2-1 defeat at Bedworth United.

But, the FA have said that their rule which makes the referee the sole arbiter of added time has to stand, although they admitted the circumstances were exceptional.

Meanwhile, allegations of misconduct by the Bedworth bench and some of their supporters are to be looked into by the FA's Disciplinary Committee as a separate issue.

Wrens Appeal FA Cup Exit

28th September, 2009

Rainworth Miners Welfare have put in a formal report and appeal to the Football Association following their 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Bedworth United on Saturday.

The basis of the Wrens' appeal centres around what they believe was insufficient added time allowed by referee Rob Lovegrove at the end of the match following two lengthy second half stoppages.

Wrens officials have claimed that there were two five-minute delays in play.

The first was to allow home keeper Andrew Kemp to be treated for an ankle injury.

And, the second was from a riot sparked by an alleged assault on Rainworth physio Dave Nicholls by a player on the Bedworth bench.

The Wrens say that should have meant a minimum of ten added minutes, on top of which another two-and-a-half minutes should have been included for five substitutions, and then more time for any other delays.

But, Mr Lovegrove added only just over seven minutes before blowing to end the match.

The Wrens have claimed that the failure of the official to add on sufficient time to cover these delays denied them the full ninety minutes in which they could possibly have equalised.

And, they are suggesting to the FA that at the very least the game should be replayed, if not awarded to them because of the alleged misconduct of the home bench and supporters.

Boss Calls for More Vocal Support

17th September, 2009

Rainworth Miners Welfare manager Rudy Funk has called on the club?s fans to increase their vocal support and lift the side through the coming FA Cup and FA Vase matches.

The Wrens boss went on record this week to thank the increasing number of supporters for their backing, and said: "When they get behind us they do lift the side, so we would like to hear more from them.

"The vocal support that Holbrook had in Saturday's FA Cup tie was wonderful to hear and it lifted their players, and it would be great to hear similar from our own followers.

"We have a good and growing fan base, and some clubs in the UniBond League aren't matching the numbers we are getting, so I would like to thank them for their continuing support, and if we can hear more sound from them that would be a bonus."

Reflecting on the 2-1 win over the Brookies and looking forward to Saturday week's second qualifying round tie at Southern League Midland Division Bedworth United, Funk added: "I thoroughly enjoyed the tie, it was a super encounter.

"Holbrook were very strong and I could see why they knocked out UniBond opposition in the previous round. They came with their game plan and stuck to it, and made life hard for us, but we were that little bit stronger in areas where it mattered."

The manager missed Tuesday night's President's Cup tie against Arnold to run the rule over the next opponents in their replay against Causeway United.

He continued: "It will be a tough tie but it doesn't faze us. We've been down the road of player higher league opposition before, and our players will enjoy the excellent pitch and fantastic set up at The Oval. They will be going from good to good and so will feel at home.

"We will give Bedworth the respect that they deserve, and who knows? Maybe we can spring a surprise there."

Funk Supports Seadogs U-Turn

3rd September, 2009

Rainworth Miners Welfare boss Rudy Funk has supported Scarborough Athletic's decision to bring back Scott Phillips - even though the midfielder scored twice against his Wrens side.

Phillips ensured a 2-0 win for the Seadogs on Bank Holiday Monday.

Hehad been sacked by the club for his over the top reaction to being substituted during an FA Cup tie against Guisborough, but apologised and was allowed to return.

Funk said: "I admire Scott Phillips, he's a magnificent player and, if it had happened at our club I would probably have forgiven him even quicker than they did after his apology.

"When you have a player of that quality sometimes you have to accept the bit of baggage that he brings."

Reflecting on the defeat at Queensgate, the Wrens boss added: "I can't argue - we lost to a penalty and a wonderful header, and my only grouse is that some of our lads did not seem to turn up - we were a bit lethargic and let ourselves down in the final third.

"We created so much movement towards that final third and then let ourselves down, which is something we have to address.

"But a massive well done to Scarborough, they look to have put their early blip behind them."

Temporary Directions to Wrens Ground

19th August, 2009

Due to roadworks in the centre of Rainworth, directions to the Welfare Ground have been temporarily altered.

The B6020 Southwell Road East is scheduled to be closed for six weeks meaning that traffic entering the village from the west (Mansfield and A617) CANNOT access the ground via the centre of the village.

During this time, traffic along the A617 to the south of Mansfield should continue ahead at the roundabout onto the dual carriageway, continue through some traffic lights where the ground comes into view on the right, and up the hill to a roundabout where you should turn right, then right again at the mini-island down Kirklington Road to the ground entrance.

If coming via Mansfield on the A6191, turn left at the island onto the dual carriageway then proceed as above.

If leaving the northbound M1 at j27 (A608), follow Mansfield signs as far as Hollinwell Corner traffic lights on A611 (edge of Kirkby-in-Ashfield) then turn right onto B6020 via Ravenshead and Blidworth, bearing right as you leave Blidworth for Rainworth.

Down a long straight hill please observe the speed limit (a child was killed by a speeding motorist here), and at T-junction at bottom of hill turn left then immediately right at lights to ground.

Traffic coming westbound along the A617 from the A614 is not affected. Ignore the road works signs prior to the roundabout and turn left to proceed into the village as normal. The works are beyond the ground entrance from this direction.

Mulligan Moves to Shirebrook

17th August, 2009

Striker Lance Mulligan has been allowed to leave Rainworth Miners Welfare and has been snapped up by Shirebrook Town.

Mulligan signed for the Wrens in pre-season, but only figured fairly briefly before picking up an injury which sidelined him for the rest of the pre-season preparations and the first week.

Meanwhile, the off-field team at the Welfare Ground has been boosted by the addition of media student Nathan Moore as club photographer to replace Wayne Griffin who resigned during pre-season.

The Wrens broke new ground in the cup tie at Radford on Saturday when, for the first time and as an experiment, live updates from the match were posted regularly onto the club's website for the benefit of any supporters who were unable to attend.

Supporters unable to travel could log on and read a preview and team news before the match, and stay informed of all the action with minute-by-minute updates throughout the tie.

Wrens Boss Keeps His Chin Up

12th August, 2009

Rainworth Miners Welfare boss Rudy Funk has refused to get disheartened following their opening day defeat at home to Winterton Rangers.

He says the club's focus remains on achieving promotion to the UniBond League despite the 4-0 loss in their first ever KoolSport NCEL Premier Division match.

With the benefit of a couple of days to look back and reflect on the Wrens' baptism of fire into their new level, Funk insisted that he still has the players who are capable of achieving the ultimate aim.

But he also re-iterated his post-match words of praise for Winterton's performance.

Funk said "I think everyone was disappointed by the scoreline, but I have to underline that a great Winterton side came with a game plan which worked for them, whereas I was a bit surprised to see that some of our players did not show the commitment or work rate ... two of the qualities that I was on record as saying would underpin any success we had this season.

"Now they have seen what the Premier Division is all about I expect them to knuckle down and play in the way I know they can.

"Nothing has changed from the statement I made in pre-season, that we want that number one spot for ourselves. I see nothing wrong in setting targets in life, and ever since I came to Rainworth I have set targets - to win promotion from the Central Midlands, to win promotion from Division One, and now that we are in the Premier Division the next target has been set.

"I am a guy who respects other clubs from top to bottom, so there is no disrespect to other very good clubs in this league in setting a target of promotion - it is the aim of all the best clubs in the division to win the league title.

"But we know the quality we have in the side, and the drive within the club to bring about more success.

"Where we went wrong on Saturday was in the way some of the players put themselves about.

"They have to remember, and I have underlined this to them, just how strong the Premier Division is. You have to respect every individual and every team that comes to Rainworth, but when it comes to kick-off time, for the duration of the match that respect goes on the back burner because they become your opponents and you are battling for three points or for a place in the next round of a cup, so you can't be respectful of a side while you are playing.

"But immediately after the game you restore that respect you rightly have for your opponents."

Wrens Declare Mission Statement

6th August, 2009

Rainworth Miners Welfare say they are not going into the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division to make up the numbers.

As the club prepares for its first ever season as a Step 5 club, manager Rudy Funk and assistant Billy Millar are adamant that they want the one promotion place to UniBond League for themselves.

The Wrens could have no better example of what can be achieved than opening day visitors Winterton Rangers.

Like Rainworth, Winterton won promotion from Division One as runners up, and they immediately showed what can be done by winning the Premier Division title at the first attempt, albeit not opting to apply for promotion to the UniBond League.

Speaking after the Wrens had demolished Heanor Town 5-1 in their final pre-season warm-up game, the management duo oozed positivity.

Assistant boss Millar, reflecting on the fact that they had ended their pre-season as they had begun it with a 5-1 win, enthused: "We have set our standards for the coming season.

"Our pre-season has got better as it has gone along, for instance Heanor are a better side than Clipstone who we beat by the same score in the first game.

"We've both enjoyed the build-up to the new season, but you have to guard against judging things on the basis of what you do in these games.

"However, one thing we will say is that we have a splendid pitch to play on, so we will be changing our style to play more football.

"It's what people want to see, and we hope that our new style, our facilities and, of course, our results, will bring more people though our gates."

Manager Rudy Funk added: "You can see in the pre-season games that our attendances have increased from last year.

"As Billy said, we've adopted a different shape, we've got one or two new players in who like to move the ball around, and when you have people like our groundsmen who prepare the pitch to such quality, and a clubhouse of such a good standard, and then see how the side is shaping up, what more does anyone want?

"There are so many big stories about clubs and how much they are splashing out on players, but when you have got what we have got, then money ? although it does help ? is secondary.

"It's all about good players coming here and enjoying being here.

"We saw against Heanor that we could change virtually the whole team at half time and yet we carried on as if nothing had happened.

"It just shows the strength of our team that we could do that and still play in the same manner as we did in the first half.

"Ever since we've joined this club, we've never spoken negatively about consolidating, and why should it be any different this season?

"This division has only one promotion, and we want that place?and that will be our mission statement throughout the year."

Wrens Start with a Win

19th July, 2009

Rainworth Miners Welfare are looking forward eagerly to the visit of League Two side Macclesfield Town on Thursday night after getting off to a winning start on Saturday.

The Silkmen's manager Keith Alexander sent a full first team to Rainworth for a pre-season friendly last season and went home with a 2-0 victory, but gave the Wrens immense credit for their contribution to an entertaining match.

So, he readily agreed to return to Kirklington Road this season, and has again indicated that he will send as strong a side as he can to the newly promoted Northern Counties East League Premier Division club.

Speaking after the Silkmen had lost 1-0 at Blue Square North side Alfreton Town, Alexander said: "I will send a good side again, but it might be a little bit younger because there are a few players I want to look at.

"It will be our fourth game but there are still a number of players I want to look at, but we enjoyed coming to Rainworth last season. It's a nice set-up and Rudy Funk and I are good friends so I will send the strongest team I can."

Wrens boss Funk said he would be happy with whatever side the Cheshire visitors bring to Rainworth: "Whatever side Keith brings I know they will do us proud and give us a very hard game, and I'm looking forward very much to the occasion," he added.

In Saturday's local derby friendly at Clipstone Andy Jones - who missed the whole of last season through injury - marked his return with the opening goal in a 5-1 victory.

Reflecting on the game, manager Funk said: "Yes it was a comprehensive win to start pre-season campaign. From where Billy Millar and I are standing we wanted to see certain performances from players, how they worked and maintained their discipline.

"Conditions were difficult for both sides in the strong wind. In the first half we didn't do ourselves justice with one or two new faces but we changed the style of play to how I want to play, and in the second half we took control.

"In these matches results are of secondary importance but we've seen a number of good performances and, I was particularly impressed by half time substitutes Dave Durrant and Julian Topliss.

"Hopefully we can push on in our pre-season campaign and transfer this kind of form into the season proper.

"Everything is running very nicely and smoothly and the new lads who have come into the club have shown tremendous attitudes and sharing the banter and camaraderie with the established players.

"It seems to me that we have put together a good side and are in for a cracking season."

Durrant is the Wrens' latest signing, from Eastwood Town, and played the second half on the right side where he looked an impressive capture and Topliss was always a handful for the home defence going forward.

Matt Baxter showed what a class acquisition he is from Hucknall Town, pulling the strings in midfield, and there was more good news for Wrens fans with long term injury victim Nathan Hollingworth making his first appearance since mid-September 10 minutes into the second half.

Off-the-field, Rainworth have a vacancy for a club photographer after the surprise resignation of Wayne Griffin last week for personal reasons which make it hard for him to continue.

Wayne, who also ran the Wrens' two web sites, has parted on good terms with the club who wish him well, but his sudden departure has left Rainworth in urgent need of a replacement so close to the start of the season.

Anyone interested in joining an ambitious and forward-looking club in this capacity should contact the Wrens' media manager Gordon Foster on 01623 794281 or 07841 917242, or email to gord@rainworth.hsnet.co.uk.

Alternatively log onto the club's website at www.intheteam.com/WRENYOURESMILING and post a message and contact details in the guestbook.

Wrens Reveal New Faces

2nd July, 2009

RAINWORTH Miners Welfare assistant manager Billy Millar has predicted that the Wrens can hold their own at their new level.

He believes they will be more than capable of living with the leading clubs in their debut KoolSport Northern Counties East League Premier Division season.

One or two judicious acquisitions have been added to last season's promotion winning side, but Millar insists that with the handful of new faces the squad that ended last season will be more than good enough to challenge for honours at the higher level.

Only striker Phil Bignall has left from last season's first team squad, but Millar is delighted by the permanent acquisition of two players who figured on loan from higher grade clubs last season.

Midfielder-defender Matt Baxter has joined on contract from Hucknall Town, despite Hucknall boss Bryan Chambers claiming last week that the highly rated player was remaining at Watnall Road.

Baxter made 15 appearances for the Yellows in the Conference North last season, and 15 more as substitute, as well as figuring in a few games for the Wrens towards the end of the campaign.

"We made Matt a priority after the way he played for us last season," said Millar. "He showed his quality in the ten games he played for us and we won nine of those.

"Also Simon Wright has agreed to come after a few loan appearances from Glapwell last season when he looked the part.

"It's nice to see Andy Jones and Nathan Hollingworth back at the club. Andy missed all of last season through injury and Nathan also missed most of the campaign, so having these two back is like having two brand new signings.

"On the striking side we have signed Julian Topliss, a former Notts County youngster, who was player of the year for Ollerton Town last season. He is training very well and looks a very good signing."

Former Mansfield Town player Lance Mulligan is also back for his second spell at Kirklington Road - Mulligan made a few appearances for the Stags' first team after coming through the youth ranks at Field Mill and on his day is difficult to contain.

"I can remember when Lance was the star of the Stags' youth team," said Millar, "so there is no doubting his ability.

"Also, Barry Alberry ended last season back with us and thoroughly enjoyed the new role he was given in midfield where he never let us down and seemed to take on a new lease of life.

"So we look to be strong in every position and will have bags of quality available.

"We showed last season that we could perform when the pressure was on, and with the addition of the few new boys we will be more than all right.

"I have won two NCEL championship medals as a player when the league was probably stronger than it is now, and when I look back at those days and then look at the squad we have here I'm sure we will do very well.

"The lads are a tightly-knit unit, the atmosphere is superb, and I can't see us falling by the wayside despite it being the highest level the club has ever contested."

Two New 'Coaches' on Board for Wrens

25th June, 2009

Rainworth Miners Welfare this week have secured a new coach and a sponsorship agreement for travel to the Wrens' away games for the coming season.

Joining the club as coach is the experienced and highly regarded Junior Glave, who has been tempted back into the game following a couple of years out.

Rainworth manager Rudy Funk said: "In many ways the backroom staff can be the most important part of a club, and I'm delighted to welcome Junior on board.

"Mark Place has done an excellent job as coach over the last three years, but he now has greater family calls on his time, and Junior is the ideal man to build on Mark's good work.

"I've always admired Junior and I worked with him in my days at Eastwood Town - he's an extraordinary fitness coach with a great pedigree and he also knows a lot about management.

"I don't think there is a better dressing room anywhere than ours, and with Junior now also coming in, that will be enhanced further.

"His appointment goes a long way towards completing the building up of this club. He has a great CV with a number of clubs who, without exception, speak very highly of him, and getting him to Rainworth is a real coup for us."

Glave readily admitted that the thought of joining the ongoing 'Rainworth revolution' played a big part in bringing him back into football.

He said: "This club has come a long way in the last few years and yet it still retains that family atmosphere although it is run very professionally.

"The ground and the facilities are immaculate, everything is geared for success, and although I have had offers from other clubs in the time I have been out of the game, my gut feeling was that this is where I wanted to be.

"I'm the kind of person who follows all the local clubs and wants them all to do well, so I have been keeping an eye on how Rudy and Billy Millar have been doing with Rainworth, and I'm delighted to have now become a part of this club."

Meanwhile a different kind of coach, on four wheels, will also be part of the club next season, following a sponsorship agreement with vehicle rental company AVR, who have agreed to supply a team mini-bus free of charge for the Wrens' away games.

Funk added: "Firms and organisations are always keen to come on board and help us because of the way we look after our sponsors, and now AVR have agreed this latest package it will mean that we travel together to away games on a regular basis.

"We are very grateful to them for their support and we hope and trust that we will be able to give them something back in return."

On the player front, the Wrens remain adamant that they will not reveal the identities of any new players until contracts become binding on 1st July.

One club recently went public in naming a player who, they said, had pledged himself to them but Funk is adamant that the player concerned will be joining Rainworth and has already signed a contract which will become valid on 1st July.

"This vindicates our policy of not naming any new players until registrations become binding," said Funk. "All that identifying a player during June dpes is to alert other clubs that he may be available.

"A club which does this can quite easily be left with egg on its face when the player turns up somewhere else, as well as raising and then dashing the hopes and expectations of supporters.

"Since this story appeared I have spoken again to the player concerned and I am assured that he is joining us and will honour the contract that he has already signed.

"We have recruited two or three fantastic lads who will add to our promotion winning side from last season, but who they are will not be revealed until the time is right.

"We already have a great squad from last season, and this season is as at least much about them as it is about the newcomers.

"We're looking forward to a very good season, I have a good feeling about it, and we won't be about consolidating at our new level.

"We are going all out to win the league at first try because there is only one promotion place and runners-up will not be good enough this time around.

"There are many very good and well established clubs in the Premier Division, but we intend to show them that we have every right to belong in their company.

"I have a personal ambition to lead a team out at Wembley, and if we get the chance to go all the way in the FA Vase that would be superb.

"But, it takes second place to achieving my ultimate aim, which I expressed on my first day as manager here, of bringing UniBond League football to Rainworth."
