Role Reversal at Wrens
4th June, 2009
Rainworth Miners Welfare chairman Brian Reece has reluctantly decided to take a step back and has resigned from his post.
But he is not leaving the club altogether, and will become vice-chairman in a role-reversal, with previous vice-chairman Derek Blow stepping up to the chairman's role.
Mr Reece, who has overseen the club's rise from the old Notts Alliance through four divisions to their new level, has cited personal reasons as his motive for taking the step back.
"There are other important calls upon my time which will mean I cannot devote as much as a chairman of a club at our new level should," he said.
"Without going into detail there are significant health problems within my immediate family, and my work situation has changed recently, so I feel it is better to take one step down and let Derek take over the helm.
"Derek has been vice-chairman here now for a two and a half years and I was delighted to have him on board when he first joined.
"He has wide experience of chairmanship at non-League level, having occupied that role at Teversal and, before that, jointly founding North Notts FC who went on to take the old Sutton Town name.
"So, while I will remain as involved as I possibly can, in my eyes Derek is the ideal man to oversee the club's continuing rise through the Pyramid.
"I'm proud to have presided over the achievements of the club during my time as chairman - success which would not have been achieved without the great team of people running the club."
Mr Blow, who is managing director of D. I. Blow (Holdings) Ltd, a holding company with a chain of opticians in the area, paid tribute to the work that Mr Reece had done, and expressed his desire to continue to build on it.
He said: "Brian has done a fantastic job as chairman of the club, in presiding over our rise from the Notts Alliance to the present level.
"He will be a hard act to follow, but remains involved and we will continue to work as a partnership, just as we have done so far.
"His personal circumstances mean that he now needs to step back for a while, but on the face of things little will change. The club's ambitions are well documented, we still have UniBond League football in our sights, and I hope I will be able to help to bring about the realisation of that aim."
Commenting on the change, Wrens manager Rudy Funk said: "I well remember the day when I first walked into Rainworth and Brian Reece made me feel at home straight away.
"Since that time his dealings with me have always been gentlemanly, he has been unstinting in his support for everything that Billy Millar and I have tried to do, and we have enjoyed an excellent working relationship.
"He's done a lot on the player front too, so I'm sad that he has found it necessary to step down, but at the same time delighted that he will remain involved with the club.
"At the same time Derek Blow is a man for whom I have the utmost respect and regard. He was chairman during my time at Teversal so I know him to be a wonderful man to work with and very professional in his approach."
Funk has also paid tribute to striker Phil Bignall, who has parted company with the club by mutual consent.
Bignall is understood to be the only departure from last season's promotion-winning squad, and Funk said of him: "Phil played a huge part in our achievement of winning promotion and I wish to go on record to record my thanks to him for his contribution. All at Kirklington Road wish him every success wherever he goes.
"I am pleased to say that everyone else of last season's squad has re-signed, while talks with a number of new players, whose identities I will not release, are at an advanced stage."

Next Season for Wrens Begins
21st May, 2009
Rainworth Miners Welfare manager Rudy Funk has wasted no time in beginning his preparations for the Wrens' first ever season at Step 5 in the Koolsport NCEL Premier Division.
And already a number of players have followed their manager's lead in committing themselves to the Kirklington Road outfit for the new campaign.
"People are saying the season finishes and the jobs are done," said Funk. "But for me as soon as one season finishes the next one starts, and I believe season 2009-10 will be a terrific one for us because we are very much on a high.
"I've already had talks with players, and while I'm not prepared to reveal at this stage who has or has not signed, I will say that all of the playing staff who ended last season with us have committed themselves to Rainworth for the new campaign in the Premier Division.
"Some individuals have already put pen to paper and, of those that are still to do so, not one has so far rejected an offer.
"We have also already signed up two new players who have experience at higher levels, although again I am not going to reveal who they are until their signatures become binding in July. But things are already looking very promising.
"Billy Millar and I have already spent several hours looking at how we proceed for next season, including what personnel we want to attract to the club, but we have concluded that the lads who won us promotion will be good enough for the new level and even the level after.
"I can't wait for time to pass so that we can get our pre-season programme under way."
Pre-season friendlies will be against some of the club's old rivals from Division One, like Barton and Emley - while Carlton Town and Eastwood Town are likely to provide higher level opposition and the club await confirmation of the expected fixture against League Two outfit Macclesfield Town.
More local clubs like Clipstone are also likely to figure in the preparations, but so far no dates for these matches have been set because the manager is working to set them up in the right order.
Preparations are also continuing apace off the field with work going on at the Kirklington Road stadium, already widely acknowledged as among the best in the region at their level.
Funk added: "As soon as the season finished work began on the pitch and the ground surrounds, which really amazed me because for me the ground was already immaculate, but this is an indication of the type of people we are working with, who want nothing but the best for Rainworth."

Funk Commits to Wrens
12th May, 2009
Rainworth Miners Welfare have moved to quash rumours of boss Rudy Funk's departure.
The Wrens manager has been linked with a number of vacant posts at higher levels after he had led the NCEL club to their second promotion in four years.
But, he put an end to all the speculation by signing a new two year deal with a further year's option on Monday night.
Talk has been rife that Funk, whose contract expired at the end of the season, would be a target for, among others, UniBond Division One South clubs Glapwell or Shepshed Dynamo, both of whom have just parted company with their managers.
Chairman Brian Reece publicly announced at Friday's club presentation night that there was no question of the manager moving on to pastures new, and slammed the speculation that had sparked the rumours.
Mr Reece said: "Let's lay this needless idle gossip to rest now and say that neither Rudy Funk nor Billy Millar (assistant manager) will be going anywhere.
"When they came to us four years ago the club had gone through a bad time and only avoided relegation from the Central Midlands Supreme Division because other clubs had failed to meet that league's floodlights rule.
"They said then that their intention was to lead us to the UniBond League, they are now just one step away from fulfilling that promise, and they will be staying to complete the job."
Funk said on Monday: "The future is bright at Rainworth and that's why I think we should stick together and see the job through, so let me emphasise that I had no intention of moving elsewhere.
"There will always be speculation linking a manager who has had success to higher placed clubs, and it's flattering to hear your name mentioned in this manner, but why would I want to move when I have everything I want at Rainworth?
"I have enjoyed very much both the highs and the lows, the tears and the joys, of the past four years. When I look at the infrastructure of the club, the people I work with - both players and behind the scenes staff - and the ground and facilities we have, there is no reason on earth to want to go elsewhere.
"Anyone who knows what football is all about can see how much hard work goes in to making this club successful. I myself am not a quitter and it would be foolish to give what we have achieved at the club to someone else.
"The people who run Rainworth have made it a better organised club than many at higher levels, we have a fabulous bunch of players, and who in their right mind would want to walk away from that?
"The only incentive would be money, and that is one thing which has never played a major part in my life. Being happy doing what you are doing is much more important to me than money, and if, as I am, you are happy at home, happy at work, and happy at your football club, what more does anyone want above that?
"In four years Billy and I have built something very special at Rainworth, and we look forward to continuing to build and progress for many more years to come."

Funk Praise for NCEL Clubs
29th April, 2009
Rainworth Miners Welfare boss Rudy Funk took time out from his club's promotion to pay tribute to the other sides he has faced this season.
He said: "Looking back on the season overall it's difficult to put into words. What amazed me the most was that we went to clubs who made us welcome and then gave us a tough game, which I always take as a matter of respect.
"I would underline that the NCEL Division One is one of the most competitive divisions in the country, because it's strong, and you see some tremendous football played between teams and clubs who have the utmost respect for each other.
"As an example, after our promotion was confirmed I was inundated by phone calls and messages of congratulations and good wishes from managers and officials of just about every other club in the league, and from players themselves.
"So I want to say to each and every single club, thank you for your good wishes, and may you one day enjoy the same success as we have achieved this season.
"You really find out how close you are to people at other clubs and although we have battled against you in your turn week in and week out, what a fantastic bunch of people the managers and players in this division have been.
"We have loved every minute in your company."

Wrens Announce Price Freeze
27th April, 2009
Newly promoted Rainworth Miners Welfare have announced that there will be no increase in admission charges when they compete in the Koolsport NCEL Premier Division next season.
They say it is as a reward for their fans' loyal support through the season.
The Wrens announced this week that they would freeze their charges at the current level of ?4 and ?2 concessions in a division where the vast majority of clubs have a ?5 admission charge.
Secretary Les Lee said: "We are keeping prices at their present level because we want to attract more of the Rainworth public through our gates rather than seeing them driving out of the village to watch other clubs in the area.
"Our last two home matches both attracted three-figure crowds and we are looking for these to be the norm when we play at the higher level, so maybe if we hold our charges down it will not only reward our supporters for their backing this season, but also attract more of the local community through our gates."
Excellent value season tickets, which are valid only for league matches, will cost ?60 with ?30 concessions applicable to juniors, and retired over-60s.
These will represent even better value than last season because there will be 19 home leagues games instead of 18, and of course at the higher level the fare on view should also be up a notch.

'No Party Yet' Warns Funk
19th April, 2009
Rainworth Miners Welfare boss Rudy Funk has vowed that there will be no party for his promoted club until the last ball of the season has been kicked and the last final whistle sounded.
The Wrens finally achieved promotion to the Koolsport NCEL Premier Division with a 3-0 victory at Worsbrough Bridge on Saturday.
But, Funk will not allow his players to ease off the gas when they bring the curtain down on their promotion season with a home local derby against Teversal next weekend.
"It's another local derby and they just want to beat us. I know that, it's my former club and there is so much pride at stake even if league positions are no longer an issue," he said.
"We still have one more thing to achieve, and that is to complete the season unbeaten at home in the league, and we will be fully focussed on that aim."
The manager was clearly emotional speaking just after the victory which clinched runners-up spot behind Scarborough.
He said: "This is a magnificent dream come true ... four years, two promotions, and I don't think our ultimate target of the UniBond League will be very far away for us next season.
"But let's concentrate on what has happened, on another momentous day in the great history of a great football club.
"For me personally it is a little bit emotional. I am a continental, and maybe we are a little more inclined to be that way than are the British, so my emotions run very high.
"And I'm very emotional today for the simple reason that this is about Rainworth people, the people who have always dreamed that Rainworth Football Club could go places. And my belief is that this club really is going places.
"Of course Billy Millar (assistant manager) and I have spoken about life in the Premier Division, but each time we have we have quickly changed the subject, because this season is not over yet.
"This season we have had one target, one aim, and that has been promotion - forget the cups, promotion has been our focus from day one of this season, and we've achieved that.
"It is something which has been borne out of the ethos of Rainworth, which involves every single person who supports or works for the club, whether as tea ladies, gate stewards, programme and press officer, secretary, treasurer, chairman and vice chairman, the list is endless and there is a great interaction between such people and the players.
"Everyone sticks together - good, bad or indifferent, there is always something positive to take, and that puts Billy and myself on a high every week.
"But promotion is earned on the field, so at the end it's down to the players, and they have been magnificent. On numerous occasions and even today I've spoken in the dressing room in the same manner, with the same passion and desire, and they have produced the goods.
"Big thanks go to our main sponsor Mr Malkan of Malkan Enterprises and all our other sponsors who have been fantastic throughout the season. So many people need a big pat on the back."
Wrens chairman Brian Reece admitted that he had been forced to swallow his initial scepticism.
He said: "Seeing the club move up to its highest level ever is brilliant and I'm so delighted for everyone at the club, also for the community of Rainworth.
"We've pushed really hard for this and I can't praise Rudy, Billy, the players, the backroom staff or the supporters highly enough - they have been absolutely wonderful all season.
"The managers have made the right decisions at the right times, to concentrate on the league, and now they have been vindicated.
"When Rudy came to the club, which had just finished in a relegation position in the Central Midlands League although we were reprieved, he told us he could bring UniBond League football to Rainworth.
"I was more than a little sceptical about that, but now we only have one more step to take for him to bring that claim to fruition.
"Now I'm looking forward to life in the Premier Division with a mixture of excitement and some trepidation, because it's uncharted territory for us, but we will ensure we have a squad that will be up to the challenge.
"We have a terrific dressing room and I can't stress too much how much that has contributed to our achievement this season."

Draper Cleared at Hearing
9th April, 2009
Rainworth Miners Welfare have received a boost in their bid for promotion to the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division.
Influential defender Matt Draper has been cleared of any misconduct following an appeal against his sending off in the league match against Bottesford Town on 21st March.
Draper was shown the red card by referee Colin Barraclough for an alleged push on the match official during a melee which was sparked by a challenge on keeper Mark Hales, who had just saved a penalty.
But, after the match Bottesford captain Daniel Hope leaped to Draper's defence and said that he had accidentally pushed the defender into the referee during the fracas.
The Wrens defender requested a personal hearing which took place last night and his case was supported by letters of evidence from Hope and also Poachers manager Ralph Clayton.
Draper, who has been forced to sit out the last five games, will now be available for Saturday's massive clash with promotion rivals Staveley Miners Welfare.

Lynam is Off to a Home Flier
3rd March, 2009
Rainworth Miners Welfare boss Rudy Funk could not hide the broad smile under his trademark moustache on Saturday.
He had just watched new boy Ant Lynam destroy visitors Tadcaster Albion with a nap hand of goals on his home debut.
"When someone goes out and scores five goals for you in one match you can see the quality he brings to the side, and you can see why we were so delighted to bring him to Rainworth", said Funk.
"He didn't just score fluke goals, they were all very clever goals, and he has added a new dimension to our side.
"We did say that we needed someone to come in and provide the extra goal or two, and he is the man.
"But at the same time you have to consider our other forwards, Phil Bignall, Julian McDonald and Malcolm Brown and give them credit.
"Even when they played together without Ant they looked a handful for anyone, and Lynam has just provided us with one more option - but what an option!"
Last season Lynam finished as leading scorer in the whole of the Northern Counties East League while helping Dinnington Town to promotion from Division One.
And although his arrival at Rainworth came with little more than two months of the season remaining, the hope is that he will just provide that extra spark to fire the Wrens into the Premier Division too.
The manager added: "Our overall performance against Tadcaster was very satisfying because we have played football in the right areas, we've defended when we've had to defend, and the 7-2 scoreline underlines how well we have been doing lately.
"Four goals at Brighouse and then seven at home is a pleasing return, but there are still one or two little things which we have to get right in the longer term."
Rainworth were slow to get going against Tadcaster, but even in the early stages Funk insisted that there were no 'After the Lord Mayor's Show' thoughts following the excellent performance at Brighouse.
"We have some great players who have a professional approach to the job in hand, and I had no doubts about a good performance against Tadcaster, because with the depth of the squad we have all the players in the team are looking over their shoulders, knowing the quality of those who are just itching to take their shirts off them.
"Whoever plays wants to do well, not only for themselves but for the team, and that was exactly how it was against Tadcaster."
Something of the shine was taken off the result by a nasty injury to James Whitehead, who sustained what is thought to be knee ligament damage while looking to pick up the pieces after the Tadcaster keeper had parried a shot from Julian McDonald.
Whitehead was due to see a specialist today and the hope is that the injury may not be as severe as it first appeared.
Nevertheless Rainworth face going into a heavy March programme of two matches per week throughout the month without him.
"Jamie has been absolutely outstanding for us this season," said the manager. "Week in, week out, he has shown what this club is all about whether playing or in training, and I have the utmost respect for the lad.
"I hope his injury is not too bad, but if it is he will certainly be missed. He's a good, honest player who brings so much to the side."
The first of those March games is tomorrow at Emley who are also pushing for the second promotion spot behind champions elect Scarborough.
"This is a massive game for us, and probably now the most important of all our remaining fixtures," said Funk.
"Hopefully we can regroup, shake off one or two knocks, and field a very strong side for this massive game.
"Whatever the outcome we know that the lads will give everything they have to give, and we hope we can come away with the three points."
Rainworth follow up the Emley visit with a trip to bottom club Glasshoughton on Saturday, and they return to the same locality next Tuesday when they go to Pontefract for the Wilkinson Sword Trophy semi-final.
Wrens Tribute To Crash Victims
20th February, 2009
Rainworth Miners Welfare will pay tribute this weekend to four teenagers who lost their lives in a car crash.
Joshua Drinkwater, Thomas Hudson, Ross Johnson and Jay Thompson were all ex-pupils of Joseph Whittaker School in the village and were good friends with many of the Wrens squad.
They were in a horrific crash on the A614 near Bilsthorpe last Friday night where Edwinstowe couple, Jonathan and Christine Bray, also lost their lives.
The Wrens will wear black armbands and there will be a minute's silence before their KoolSport NCEL Division One match at Brighouse Town.

Wrens Snap Up Lynam
4th February, 2009
Rainworth Miners Welfare have bolstered their strike force as they aim for promotion from KoolSport NCEL Division One.
They have signed Ant Lynam who was the division's top scorer last season and whose goals helped Dinnington Town make the move up to the Premier Division as champions.
He has been playing lower-league football for most of this season but Wrens boss Rudy Funk is hopeful that Lynam can be a similar talisman for his side this time round.
Rainworth are currently in fifth place in Division One, eight points behind second-placed Askern Villa but with three games in hand.

Rudy's Praise For Sedge
3rd October, 2008
Despite bowing out on penalties, Rainworth Miners Welfare boss Rudy Funk has praised their Presidents Cup hosts Liversedge.
The manager said: "I'd like to tell Steve Newton, Liversedge's manager, not only what a great side he has, but also what a wonderful team he has behind the scenes.
"All of us who made the trip on Tuesday night agreed that it was a fantastic game which we all enjoyed despite the eventual outcome.
"I would especially like to commend their backroom staff, and the people behind the scenes, and compliment the club on their fabulous hospitality.
"The welcome and reception we received from them was fantastic, and they are a credit to the Northern Counties East League."
On the match itself, Rudy added: "Probably no-one deserved to lose, but I'm delighted that we responded so well to the defeat by Grimsby Borough.
"The whole team did themselves proud, we played some great football and created the greater chances against a very good side. We got our game together again and I hope that the loss to Grimsby was just one of those blips.
"Billy Millar and I were delighted with the debut of Phil Bignall who made a good start for us. Phil was a target for us before the start of the season and we know what he is capable of.
"Billy and I would also like to wish Phil Massingham well. We have agreed to release him for personal reasons and he goes with our blessing and very best wishes."
Massingham is understood to be joining Radcliffe Olympic, while another striker who has left Rainworth, Adam Lillie, has returned to Graham Street Prims.

Phil Massingham has left the KoolSport NCEL Division One side because of personal commitments and the club have wished him well.
Management team Rudy Funk and Billy Millar have brought in Phil Bignall on loan for a month from UniBond League side, Carlton Town, with a view to a permanent move.
He featured in last night's penalty shoot-out exit from the Presidents Cup at Liversedge.

Wrens Success Marred By Injury
19th August, 2008
Rainworth Miners Welfare's victory in the FA Cup on Saturday was marred by a serious injury to one of their opposition's players.
Dudley Town's Craig Shaw suffered a broken leg just before the end of the first half, following a bad challenge by Danny Naylor which earned the Wrens midfielder a red card.
Play was delayed for 37 minutes while and ambulance and paramedics were called for.
Manager Rudy Funk commented afterwards: "Everyone enjoys going somewhere different for an FA Cup tie and winning, but of course the shine was taken off it today by the injury.
"I've never seen such a quiet dressing room as when we went off while the lad was being treated. No-one talked, everyone just felt for him and of course we wish him a speedy recovery.
"I would also like to express my sympathy to Danny. He's not a nasty player, it was just one of those unfortunate things that can happen in football and he was horrified by the outcome of his challenge."
After the match Rainworth donated the money owed them by Dudley, estimated at ?200, to Shaw.

Wrens Show Support To Armed Forces
25th June, 2008
Rainworth Miners Welfare have pledged to support Great Britain's armed forces by offering free admission to Wrens' home matches to services personnel and veterans next season.
Rainworth are the second Northern Counties East League club to announce this concession, following Scarborough Athletic who made their announcement last week.
Wrens chairman Brian Reece told Chad: "This is something I've been considering for a while now. Although Scarborough maybe stole our thunder a little, we were not in a race to get in first, I applaud their decision also, and I hope other clubs may be moved to follow suit.
"As a veteran of the Household Cavalry myself, I appreciate how important it is to support our service men and women in any way we can and this is a token of our appreciation to our armed forces."
To gain free admission to matches, spectators will need to show a photo ID in the form of an MOD90 service ID card, or other photographic proof of service. Veterans can show a regimental association or Royal British Legion membership card.
Rainworth are also offering free admission to all children under 10 if accompanied by an adult next season.
