Worsbrough awarded points following abandonment
14th November, 2024
The NCEL has released the following statement regarding the outcome of an abandoned game in Division One towards the start of the season.
The NCEL Division One match between Club Thorne Colliery and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic on 10th August, 2024, was abandoned after an alleged racist comment was made by a player from Club Thorne Colliery to an opponent.
After a personal hearing and consideration by the Serious Case Board of the FA, the allegation against the player involved was found to be proven, resulting in a six game ban for him and seven disciplinary points added to the record of Club Thorne Colliery.
A panel of the NCEL then met to determine the outcome of the match and, after looking at the findings of the FA panel and statements submitted by both sides, it decided that the incident was a breach of League Rule 8.38.
That rule states that: "In the event of a match being abandoned due to the conduct of one Club or its members or supporters, the Board has the power to order that the match is not replayed and to award either one or three points to the Club not at fault."
The decision of the panel in this case was to award three points to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
This decision was appealed by Club Thorne Colliery and this appeal was dismissed on all grounds by an FA Appeal Board on 12th November, 2024.
As a result, the original decision of the NCEL panel will stand and three points will be added to the record of Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
In accordance with the regulations, the league table will be adjusted so that Worsbrough Bridge Athletic are awarded the victory but no change will made to the goals for and against record of either club.
The league are thankful to Club Thorne for their actions in response to the incident, both in the way that they dealt with the player responsible, communicated in a responsible manner and complied with all aspects of the investigation.
No further comment will be made on this incident.
