Unsung Football Hero award for Kevin
18th April, 2016
Kevin Newton has become the final winner of the Unsung Football Hero competition by the Nottingham Building Society (known as The Nottingham) for his dedication to Teversal Football Club.
Kevin (51), of Vere Avenue, Sutton-in-Ashfield, is the secretary of the club, where is he has been heavily involved for 30 years from a player to be involved behind the scenes. He is currently the Football Secretary for the whole club, Chartered Standard Co-ordinator and Coach for the U11s Sunday team and the Tevie Tots training sessions.
He was nominated for the award by Russ Bowler, a coach at the club, who said: "Kevin is very passionate and always gives 110% to make sure everything is on time and makes sure that everyone is happy.
"He is the club secretary but he also deals with match day programmes, the post-match articles, goes to all sorts of meetings and helps with all the teams from seniors to tots. He always makes sure we have the right amount of players available for the Tevie Tots, including sorting out drills for training.
"There aren't enough days in the week, never mind hours in the day, as he is always doing something involving the club."
Kevin joined the club when senior football returned there in 1986. In 1990, when is looked likely the club would fold, Kevin, John and Jim Bowers and Archie Bowers stepped in to save it. They took over the running of the club and it became a success story - going from just one adult men's team to now having 13 youth teams in ten age groups, one ladies team and a senior set up involving the first team and reserves.
Now Kevin, who works as a Road Space Co-ordinator for A-one+, spends an average of 4-6 hours a day on football related issues. He says his biggest challenge is helping the club to secure the football ground and ensuring they have good training facilities.
Speaking about winning the award, Kevin said: "I was shocked. I never expected to win anything as I don't do it for that, but it was really nice of Russ to nominate me."
His proudest achievement is seeing how the club has grown over the years. It is something that is well justified as a number of the players have gone on to successful careers in professional football - Jason Law who now plays for Mansfield Town being the latest.
"We are a very ambitious club run by some passionate volunteers, including John Courties, Director and Bar Manager, Peter Cockerill, Chairman and Director and Keith Parnill, the Youth Secretary," said Kevin.
Luckily Teversal FC is also important to Kevin's wife, Alison and their children Eleanor (22) and Craig (21), who all volunteer at the club.
"For us it really is a family affair. My wife runs the tea bar, my daughter is involved in the club administration and my son is a Level 2 Coach and plays in the senior set up. Even our children's partners are involved with Teveral FC," he added.
The Nottingham's campaign ran throughout the 2015-16 football season and has found ten 'unsung heroes' who have shown extraordinary dedication and commitment to grassroots football.
As part of the prize Kevin is able to take three people with him to enjoy a Nottingham Forest game from the comfort of the executive box.
He will be accompanied by his wife, Alison, Russ Bowler who nominated him for the award and Russ' son Nathan.
