Macron NCEL 2025/26 Match Review #5

10th August, 2025

Penistone Church and Thackley head the early Macron NCEL Premier Division table as they both picked up goalless draws on Saturday in the third weekend of the new campaign.

The action began in disappointing fashion on Friday night as Golcar United's home clash with Sheffield was called off after 80 minutes due to floodlight problems that meant that a section of the pitch was too dark for the game to proceed.

Sheffield were leading 1-0, scored by Nathan Whitehead, when the referee brought an early end to proceedings.

Saturday saw seven matches take place in the top flight with Penistone held by Eccleshill United and Thackley finishing level with Horbury Town in a rare weekend where two games ended without a breakthrough.

The other five fixtures saw sides pick up their opening wins of the league campaign with Rossington Main the biggest victors as a brace each from Reece Fielding and Dylan Mantle saw them defeat hosts Bottesford Town 4-0.

Harry Day also struck twice for Parkgate as they beat visitors Handsworth 2-0 and Liversedge notched up the same scoreline at home to Beverley Town, Joseph Walton's first half opener added to after the interval by Kelan Swales.

Barton Town's single-goal win over Frickley Athletic came courtesy of Lewis Stephens' decider midway through the opening period for the home side.

And, Knaresborough Town came from 1-0 down with five minutes remaining to defeat visitors Albion Sports, Max Barnard and Slater Barkham-Barnes turning the game on its head after Hamza Hamdosh had given the Lions a 75th minute lead.

There was a full programme of matches in Division One with South Leeds jumping to the top of the table after an entertaining 4-3 home victory over Wakefield AFC.

Tyler Bussue put them ahead in the sixth minute but they trailed at half time thanks to an Akeel Francis penalty and a Rhys Thomas strike close to the interval.

Harley Blankley netted twice to give the hosts a 3-2 lead before Christopher Salt restored parity once again only for Taylor Starkey to pounce with five minutes remaining to claim the points for Craig Ogilvie's side.

Goole AFC's 4-0 victory at Brigg Town sees them up into second, Ashley Worsfold, Mitchell Carlton, James Simmonite and Shay Muirhead with the goals for the Vikings.

Curtis Wilkinson and Taylor Nicholson were the scorers in the final five minutes to grab hosts Dearne & District a 2-0 win over Appleby Frodingham that sees them climb into third.

Armthorpe Welfare and Club Thorne Colliery were also victorious to complete the top five with a Michael Dunn double helping Welfare to a 4-1 home victory over Crowle Colts.

Thorne, meanwhile, had to wait until stoppage time to snatch the points, Harry Douglas with the strike for a 1-0 win against visitors Winterton Rangers.

Harrogate Railway Athletic grabbed a last-gasp equaliser through Benjamin Parkes for a 2-2 home draw with Maltby Main that sees the Rail drop down to sixth whilst the Miners move up into twelfth.

Ilkley Town's hero was Matthew Swift as he scored with seconds remaining to secure a 4-3 win at Glasshoughton Welfare in dramatic fashion and his side are now seventh in the table.

There were 2-1 victories for Worsbrough Bridge Athletic and Doncaster City, Jake Squires and Connor Glavin on the scoresheet for the Briggers at Nostell Miners Welfare whilst Kieran Mortimer and Mason Barlow ensured the win for Doncaster at Route One Rovers.

Athersley Recreation also prevailed by the same scoreline, Keenan Davies-Mosley and James Woodhouse with the goals as they won 2-1 at home to Selby Town after going behind to an early Harry Clapham penalty.

Meanwhile, the spoils, along with four goals, were shared between Louth Town and their visitors Leeds UFCA, Will Pennell's 86th minute penalty for the White Wolves wrapping up the scoring in a 2-2 draw.

And, Desmond Okoro was the scorer for Tadcaster Albion as they hosted a friendly with Leeds United U21s on Saturday lunchtime in a game that saw the visitors claim a 2-1 victory in a tight contest.
