NCEL Match Review 2024/25 #72

9th May, 2025

Beverley Town lifted the JCP Construction League Cup in memory of James Hitchcock whilst Hallam narrowly missed out on County Cup glory as the final two matches of the 2024/25 season were played in midweek.

Tuesday night saw Beverley take on NCEL Premier Division rivals Knaresborough Town at Scunthorpe United's Attis Arena and they took an early lead through Glen Sani with McCauley Snelgrove doubling their advantage from the penalty spot in the 35th minute.

And, the tie looked beyond doubt when Cameron Connelly added a third as the game went into first half stoppage time but Knaresborough, who were looking to lift the trophy for a second time following their triumph in 2014, refused to lie down.

Adam Priestley pulled one back before the interval and his side were given a further boost when their opponents were reduced to ten men around the hour mark, Kian Larkin receiving his second yellow card of the evening.

That was quickly followed by a second goal for Knaresborough from Jack Lazenby, leading to a nail-biting final half hour that saw Beverley hold on to become League Cup winners for the first time in front of an excellent crowd of 587.

It capped a fantastic first year in the Premier Division for them, ending on a high having missed out on promotion in the play-offs after finishing fourth in the table.

Knaresborough will, meanwhile, use the performance as a springboard for next season where they will look to improve on the twelfth spot that they ended up in this time round.

Then, on Thursday night to bring the curtain down on the campaign, Hallam looked to add further silverware as they took on Worksop Town at Hillsborough in the Final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup.

Both sides went into the game on a high after gaining promotion through their respective play-offs, Hallam moving up into the Pitching In Northern Premier League whilst Worksop are going up into National League North.

Worksop took a sixteenth minute lead but Rio Allan, with his 39th goal of the season in all competitions, restored parity for Hallam in front of their noisy support amongst a mammoth attendance of 2614.

But, their hopes were dashed as the game veered towards stoppage time as the Tigers dramatically snatched their second goal to take the trophy in a 2-1 victory.

Hallam, though, can be extremely delighted about their performance in what was a competitive final and all at the NCEL wish them luck in their new adventure next season at Step 4 of the FA's National League System.
