NCEL Match Review 2024/25 #35

28th November, 2024

Beverley Town, Penistone Church and Silsden AFC are the latest sides to make it through to the Quarter-Finals of this season's JCP Construction League Cup after Third Round victories in midweek.

All three games were tight affairs with Beverley playing out a goalless draw at home with Pickering Town before progressing after winning 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out.

Samuel Scrivens grabbed the only goal of the tie as Penistone edged past visitors Bottesford Town whilst Silsden won 2-1 at Division One leaders Horbury Town to maintain the Premier Division's dominance in the competition.

Kayle Price grabbed both of the Cobbydalers' goals, one either side of the interval, before James Cusworth pulled one back for the hosts in the 79th minute but an equaliser ultimately proved elusive.

There was one game in the Premier Division with Thackley climbing up into fourth spot with a 3-1 home win over the side they replace in that position, Albion Sports.

Joseph Mitchell and Luke Rhodes netted to give the home side a 2-0 lead by the interval, Ellis Wade halved the deficit on the hour mark but Antony Brown calmed Thackley's nerves with their third with fifteen minutes remaining.

It was a similar story in Division One as Brigg Town won by the same scoreline to also move up three places to fourth in the table.

Finley O'Sullivan, Joshua Batty and Harrison Coley struck within an eight minute period around the midway point of the second period to take control at Swallownest who scored an injury time consolation through Joseph Gore.

Elsewhere, it was County Cup action, with Maltby Main prevailing 3-2 in their all-NCEL Third Round tie in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup at the expense of visitors Wombwell Town.

It threatened to be a comfortable evening for the home side who raced to a 3-0 lead by the break, courtesy of an Ashley Flynn brace and a goal from Wade Ripley.

Owen Fieldsend and Nicholas Guest struck to bring Wombwell back to within touching distance with ten minutes remaining but the Miners held on to claim the victory.

Rio Allan's early double, along with one each from Calum Ward, Daniel Buttle and Danny South saw Hallam through 5-2 at home to Silkstone United.

But, Nostell Miners Welfare, Dearne & District and Handsworth all bowed out at home to sides ranked higher in the FA's National League System.

Jack Maeer netted for Nostell as they went down 2-1 to Stocksbridge Park Steels, Jake Phillis was the scorer for Dearne in their 4-1 defeat to Sheffield, and Scott Ruthven brought Handsworth level with Worksop Town but the Ambers were also beaten 4-1.

Meanwhile, Shelley were beaten 5-1 by visitors Barnsley U21s, Joseph Booth with their only goal that came towards the end of the encounter at the Stafflex Arena.

In the Second Round of the West Riding County Cup, Premier Division hosts knocked out Division One opposition in two all-NCEL affairs.

Nicky Boshell's hat-trick added to Marcus Day's early opener as Campion defeated Yorkshire Amateur 4-1, Sam Ali with a leveller for the Ammers in a game that was 1-1 at half-time.

And, there were two goals each for George Doyle and Callum Petch, with Oliver Russon also getting on the scoresheet, in Golcar United's 5-2 home win over Selby Town, Harry Clapham and Charlie Petch with one apiece for the Robins.
