NCEL Match Review 2024/25 #17

22nd September, 2024

Albion Sports were the first NCEL side to make it through to the First Round Proper of this season's Isuzu FA Vase as a tight game on Friday night ended in a penalty shoot-out win at home to Premier Division rivals Tadcaster Albion.

Dominic Staunton rescued the game for the hosting Lions as his 87th minute penalty restored parity after Elliott Andrew had given Tadcaster the lead towards the end of the first half.

It finished 1-1 and it was the home side who prevailed 5-4 on spot kicks to go into Monday's draw.

Seven more of our teams joined them in the hat, including Beverley Town who also prevailed against league rivals although it was a more one-sided affair as they beat visitors Winterton Rangers 5-0.

Glen Sani and Cameron Connelly netted twice whilst James Piercy also got on the scoresheet to see their side comfortably through.

Campion progressed with a 2-0 home victory over Billingham Synthonia, Aidan Kirby and Aidan Day with the early strikes against their visitors whilst Wombwell Town and Yorkshire Amateur also made home advantage count with wins in the ninety minutes.

Edward Agnew's brace added to Jordan Kershaw's opener to give Wombwell a 3-0 victory over Ashton Athletic whilst the Ammers picked up a morale-boosting 3-1 win against Newcastle Benfield, Birama Diallo getting the early breakthrough with Amari Smith scoring twice to make sure of success.

Harrogate Railway Athletic, meanwhile, won 4-3 on penalties to go through at the expense of visitors Whitley Bay after Sam Clothier had scored both of their goals in a 2-2 draw.

Wakefield AFC were the designated home side but the match was switched to their opponents Barnton and, despite the enforced trip due to ground unavailability, it was the NCEL outfit who went through, Akeel Francis and Mason Rubie with the goals in a 2-1 victory.

And, in Sunday afternoon's all-NCEL game, Handsworth were 2-0 winners at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Oliver Fearon and Joe Parkin finding the net in the first half to send the Ambers into the next stage.

Elsewhere, however, it was disappointment for our sides with Frickley Athletic frustrated in a 2-2 draw that ended in a defeat on penalties to visitors Sandbach United.

Robert Guilfoyle's spot kick and Jamie Tomlinson were the goals for the Blues but a 5-4 loss in the shoot-out means they exit this season's competition.

Leon Hurles-Brook and Nathan Keightley staged a mini-comeback for Penistone Church before they went out 4-2 at Abbey Hey and Armthorpe Welfare were defeated by a single goal at Ashton Town.

Adam Priestley and Ashley Flynn were also goalscorers but they were only consolations for Knaresborough Town in a 2-1 loss at Colne and for Maltby Main as they were beaten 3-1 at Darwen, respectively.

And, Goole AFC and Selby Town both suffered 3-1 home defeats, Liam Flanagan netting for Goole as they were beaten by New Mills whilst AFC Liverpool won at the Robins after Matthew Dawes had given the hosts a ninth minute lead.

There were five games in the Premier Division on Saturday with two of the top five meeting at Dennyfield as Thackley ran out 2-1 victors at home to Hallam.

Finn Donovan gave the hosts a 31st minute advantage that was cancelled out in first half stoppage time by Rio Allan but there was very late drama as Antony Brown scored in added on time in the second period to grab the points.

Thackley stay second and have closed the gap on leaders Penistone to three points whilst Golcar United are third, a further point behind after their 4-0 home triumph over Bottesford Town.

Keegan Hartley broke the deadlock, George Doyle netted twice and Isaac Travis completed the tally late on to make it four wins out of four at the Skye Direct Stadium so far this season for Golcar.

Fourth-placed Silsden AFC were unable to close the gap as they went down to a 1-0 loss at Barton Town, Elliot Broughton with the decider in the 87th minute for the Swans who climb to fourteenth.

Manasse Kianga struck twice for Rossington Main as they move up into sixth following their 4-1 home defeat of Pickering Town, Cameron Hough and Ross Hannah also on the scoresheet for Main with Ben Silburn finding the net for the Pikes.

And, Parkgate were 2-1 victors at Eccleshill United, Luis Afonso Ferreira and Harry Day with a quick double around the hour mark after Zackary Sangster had put the hosts ahead early in the second period.

The lead at the top of Division One changed hands twice over the weekend with Dearne & District replacing Wombwell at the summit as they beat hosts Swallownest 4-0 on Friday night.

Bayley Lowe and Jake Phillis ensured a two goal advantage by the interval that was doubled after the break by Rylee Grove and Shay Evans-Booth.

Then, Horbury Town replaced Dearne at the top of the table on Saturday, Luke Playford and Gibril Bojang claiming the 3-1 win at Louth Town after Jock Curran had levelled Bailey Wright's opener for the White Wolves in a game that was 1-1 at half-time.

Athersley Recreation drop out of the top five after their 4-0 loss at Nostell Miners Welfare in what was a much-needed win for the nineteenth-placed hosts, Gracjan Klimczak with a hat-trick and Thomas Masden adding the fourth.

Brigg Town and Ilkley Town jump above the Rec with Brigg claiming a point at Glasshoughton Welfare in a game they were leading 2-0 by midway through the first period, courtesy of a Brett Agnew strike and a Joshua Batty penalty.

Alexander Clarke and Miguel Cassama struck back-to-back around the hour mark for Welfare in a game that ended 2-2.

Ilkley, meanwhile, defeated Appleby Frodingham 3-1, James Nightingale and Jack Lane putting the hosts two goals ahead before Nathan Jarman halved the deficit and Alfie Dean made sure of the victory with the Baht'atters third on 89 minutes.

Thomas Gladwin got the only goal of the game as Dronfield Town beat visitors Club Thorne Colliery to climb to sixteenth whilst Colliery fall to thirteenth.

And, it was honours even as South Leeds drew 2-2 at home with Shelley, the away side twice leading through Klein Gwenero and James Bootland only for quick equalisers for Reece Mudd's men from Benjamin Agu and James Law.
