NCEL Match Review 2024/25 #9

25th August, 2024

It proved to be a frustrating weekend for NCEL sides in the First Round of Qualifying of this season's Isuzu FA Vase with eight teams progressing out of the 25 who took part in ties.

Wombwell Town became the first to book their place in the next stage as they won 4-0 at home to Division One rivals Nostell Miners Welfare in one of two games played on Friday night.

Edward Agnew opened and closed the scoring with his brace whilst a Gavin Allott penalty and a James Morris own goal added to the hosts' tally as they raced into a 3-0 half-time lead.

In the evening's other match, Pickering Town led through goals from Joe Wood and Nathan Dyer either side of the interval but eventually went down 3-2 to visitors Newcastle Benfield.

There were slim pickings for our teams on Saturday as five sides kept themselves on the Road to Wembley.

In the two all-NCEL ties, Premier Division sides Beverley Town and Winterton Rangers went through at the expense of their Division One hosts.

Daniel Earl's double, added to by Luka Suluburic, earned Beverley a 3-1 win at Dronfield Town with Callum Mawbey striking an equaliser for the hosts.

And, Winterton were held to a 1-1 draw by Brigg Town, Stephen McCarron's own goal putting the visitors ahead in the opening period before parity was restored by a Joshua Batty penalty early in the second half.

Rangers then prevailed in the penalty shoot-out, winning 3-2 on spot kicks to knock out their near neighbours.

Armthorpe Welfare and Handsworth were victors on their travels with a double from Mahamadou Ceesay and one each for Mohammed Kaba and Lewis Shillito ensuring a 4-1 win for Welfare at Cammell Laird 1907.

And, Handsworth picked up their first ever away win in the competition as Mitchell Dunne's brace, sandwiching a Brandon Bagley strike, saw them through 3-1 at Runcorn Town.

Meanwhile, Wakefield AFC are into the next round after Sebastian Losa and James Eyles netted in their 2-0 home defeat of 1874 Northwich.

The rest of the afternoon's action, however, saw thirteen NCEL sides fall at the first hurdle, all beaten at home.

Athersley Recreation went down 2-0 to Retford United whilst Ellis Barkworth scored in Barton Town's 2-1 loss to Stockport Town and Aristide Cunha found the net for Bottesford Town as they were beaten 5-1 by Barnton.

Darwen were 1-0 winners at Dearne & District, Eccleshill United lost 7-3 to Chadderton, Harvey Booth with two of the Eagles' goals, and Joe Rawcliffe's strike was a consolation for Glasshoughton Welfare as they were defeated 3-1 by Cheadle Town.

Two sides bowed out on spot kicks after 2-2 draws with Golcar United beaten 6-5 on penalties by New Mills after goals in normal time through George Doyle and Alfie Wilkinson.

Billy Mole grabbed a late equaliser for Horbury Town against Ashton Town but the visitors eventually prevailed 5-4 on spot kicks.

Ilkley Town went ahead through Toby Marriott but were beaten 2-1 by Penrith whilst there were 2-0 defeats for Louth Town and Parkgate against Heanor Town and Sandbach United, respectively.

And, Rossington Main and Thackley both lost 3-1, Ross Hannah scoring for Main against Retford FC and Tawheed Ahmed with an early equaliser for the Dennyboys as they went down to Colne.

It was a better Sunday for NCEL sides, though, as both Selby Town and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic secured well-fought home victories.

Edward Dry scored the only goal of the game as Selby overcame Skelmersdale United whilst a hat-trick from Keelan Grist saw the Briggers through as they beat Prestwich Heys 3-2.

There were three games in the Premier Division on Saturday as Hallam missed out on a chance to go top of the table following a 2-2 draw at Albion Sports.

Sumaili Cisse opened the scoring for the hosting Lions on 52 minutes but Leon Howarth quickly equalised and Ross Goodwin pounced to put the Countrymen ahead going into the final quarter of the game.

Kieran Suddards, though, ensured the spoils were shared as he grabbed the home side's second on 76, making it three draws out of their opening five games for Sports.

Campion move up to eleventh after a Zak Khan brace, the second coming in stoppage time, snatched a 2-1 win at Frickley Athletic, William Sutton with the home side's goal.

And, Goole AFC picked up their first points of the campaign as Marcel Chipamunga struck twice and Liam Flanagan converted a penalty in a 3-2 home win over Penistone Church, Nathan Keightley and Samuel Scrivens netting for the visitors.

Meanwhile, in the two Division One matches, Billy Stafford and Max Skelton were the scorers as Swallownest won 2-1 at Appleby Frodingham to climb into fifth.

And, South Leeds jump to seventh after James Law's double and a Benjamin Agu hat-trick, all in the opening period, saw them romp to a 5-0 victory at Shelley.
