Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2022/23 #45

26th January, 2023

Albion Sports became the last team to book their place in this season's Toolstation NCEL League Cup Quarter-Finals with a midweek win over Shirebrook.

The Lions travelled to their Derbyshire hosts knowing that a victory would make it an all-Premier Division final eight as Shirebrook were the sole Division One side left in the competition.

Thomas Ponter gave them a 33rd minute lead before Zak Khan made sure of progression early in the second-half in a 2-0 victory for Rizwan Mohammed's side that puts Sports in the hat for the Quarter-Finals draw that takes place next Tuesday (31st).

There was one Premier Division game in midweek with Penistone Church picking up the points to consolidate sixth spot in a 2-1 home win over Yorkshire Amateur.

The visitors took an early lead through an own goal by home keeper Harry Ambler but they could not hold on to claim what would have been the basement side's third league win of the season.

Thomas Charlesworth levelled matters around the half-hour mark and the hosts' second, in the 48th minute through Ryan Hallsworth, proved decisive.

Campion have progressed to the Semi-Finals of the West Riding County Cup following their excellent 4-2 win at higher-ranked Brighouse Town.

Mark Ferguson's late double sealed the victory after the home side had clawed it back to 2-2 following early goals from Daniel Illingworth and Aidan Kirby.

Daniel Naidole netted for Golcar United but they went down 3-1 at Barnoldswick Town at the same stage of the competition whilst Horbury Town were beaten 4-2 by visitors Liversedge.

Abdul Asamoah and Samuel Kyeremeh twice brought them back level before two goals were conceded in the final quarter-of-an-hour to bow out of the competition.

An 82nd minute penalty for Joe Jagger, his 30th goal of the season, settled an all-NCEL Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup Quarter-Final in Emley AFC's favour as they won 2-1 at home to Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

Earlier, Iyrwah Gooden had given the Pewits a first-half lead and Ben Gelder equalised soon after the interval for the away side.

And, Thackley got some much-needed minutes under their belts after the recent bad weather as they played a friendly at home to Guiseley which ended in a 3-0 win for the visitors.

Meanwhile, there was one postponed game as Barton Town's home Premier Division clash with North Ferriby fell victim to a frozen pitch.
